The two new ones are certainly making themselves at home! Here are Wellington and Napoleon on my desk yesterday.

Wellington especially hasn't got a care in the world

They are 100% purebred SAAs - Sarajevo Alley Cats! And no, they don't have URIs, their eyes are actually clear, but they have almost everything else. The fleas have gone but the worms are still a problem, and Napoleon is not yet eating properly. His stools are very loose, too, maybe because of the worms, and he doesn't clean himself. I let them into my room when the girls are out, but I am still keeping them (and bowls and litter boxes) separated.

Thanks for the thought, Howard. No, I went to see the police this week again, and though sympathetic, they agree with me that my car is probably in Albania by now!

I can't keep them. I am trying to hide them from the landlord. Right now it is OK because htey are spending hteir time in hteir own little room or my bedroom, and I took them downstairs once. But I go away on Thursday for ten days, and I am sure he will find out in that time. I think he will freak. And my housemates are not too happy either. But I really do not know what to do if I can't find homes, and that is very difficult here - on the whole Bosnians don't have cats and internationals are worried about taking them home with them.

Susan, I am scared to death. Tonight Wellington peed in a large potted plant before I could stop him and Napoleon is making very smelly poo (in the litter box) and my housemate John is freaking out. When I go away on Thursday for ten days I am leaving his girlfriend Amanda in charge, and I trust her, but not him. I would not put it past him to do something awful. I am asking everyone I know if they would foster these two just while I am away but so far no takers. The girl who was here in the summer can come for at least one long weekend, but can't do more than that. And I have got nowhere with finding permanent homes. I think I have bitten off more than I can chew, but what could I do? There was no way I could not have taken them in, and considering how sick they were they have been very good - even the potted plant accident was not their fault - we had visitors who wanted to see them so they were in the living room with no litter box. Who can blame them?

I am on the point of cancelling my trip, yet I have to go - I have to see the builders and approve the next stage of work on the house or it will never get done, and I also have to see the lawyers in London and sign for the selling of my apartment there. I am at my wits' end.

They don't have any vet boarding services?

This is Bosnia! No, there are no vet boarding services, no animal shelter, no animal organisations even. There is a City-run dog patrol, that catches the ferals left from the war and euthanises the same day, and every couple of years they do a cull (by shooting) of feral cats! That is animal welfare, Sarajevo style. Although a few Bosnians I know feed 'their' outside cats, no one has inside cats - they are usually considered vermin. I am thought very odd and I had search long and hard before I found a landlord who would let me have one in the house. But his patience was exhausted at three, and I had to really show him they are not destroying everything. I can't have more.

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
Oh Jenny i wished i lived nearer to you because they could have had the spare room for 2 weeks
I don't blame you for being suspicious of your housemate because i'd be the same especially when he's showing his disaproval already

Are their litter trays in your bedroom so he can't gripe about them even more?

Would they have to go into quarantine still if they came to the UK?

Thanks for your concern! Yes, quarantine rules apply and they haven't even had their rabies shots yet. If I end up keeping them they would of course come to France with the others, and I have been debating that, even asking someone (if I could find anyone) to foster them just till I leave.

But I have had a long talk this morning with Amanda, John's girlfriend, and I think we have worked something out. While I am away they will live in my bedroom/office, which is very large, and they are used to spending a lot of time there anyway. I will make things as easy as possible by giving her loads of litter bags and litter so that she does not have to scoop, just throw it all out daily. I will get them two new large trays to minimise smell and mess. Actually, the smell is better today since I gave them the second dose of their (vet prescribed) wormer last night. Amanda will not let them downstairs, where they might annoy John or have an accident. My room is parquet, and I will lift the rug before I go, so it will be easy to clean and the landlord, if he finds out, will not have too much complaint. My girls will have to find somewhere else to sleep but that will not be difficult as they can stay in the living room or have another bedroom. They are already used to the smell of the kittens and on the whole are interested but disdainful.

I shall be as nervous as hell, but it is the best I can do.
