One of my cats has the strange trait of trying any food as long as you offer it to her from your hand. The others will sniff a bit, then turn and walk off if it is something unappetizing, but she will sniff for about 45 seconds, take it, and start licking it. If she likes it, she will eat it. if she does not, she will stare at you as if to say "what the--", then walk away a few steps and sit down. Out of curiosity, I've tried to see if there is something she WON't try. No such luck. To date, she has not turned down a single thing. Is it normal for them to try everything held in front of them, or is kitty just a little weirder than most?

Sounds like my Pushkin. He's a big scrounge. He'll be willing to try anything that we're eating. We've created a monster by letting him eat though. Now I have to share my breakfast with him just to get some peace.
Last night I made muffins and let them cool on top of the stove. Well, a while later I wanted to try one - Pushy had beat me to it. He didn't just eat one, he tried a whole bunch just to see if any were to his liking! Little cat bites out of every other muffin!

When we first got Emma, she was very underweight because she had been living in the street in the middle of winter, so she ate everything that wasn't nailed down!!
Nowadays, she still likes to smell whatever I'm eating, and will lick a little at it if its something she likes (aka made of a dead animal or cheese-related) but turns her nose up at it if she's not interested. But this cat used to eat anything and everything-- dried fruit, yogurt, toast, refried beans, and she once decided, and later regretted, to eat a wasabi pea!!

That is very funny.
She is not quite that crazy...lol. she will not actually try your food unless you are offering it to her. she will just sit and watch from a few feet away as you eat, and only walk up to you if you put a bit of food on your palm and hold it out to her. She will try ANYTHING once. If you leave the room with a steaming plate on the table, she will simply follow you. The only people food she begs for is steamed broccoli and steamed shrimp, and that is usually in the form of a few small chirps as she dashes across the room to grab it. She loves steamed broccoli the way that lots of other cats love catnip (which she also loves a lot). Everyone loves the steamed shrimp.

Oh Harley is a little pig! If I'm eating in the living room, he will get right up there with you and try and eat whatever your eating! And he wont leave me alone til I give him some and then he's content! He loves trying to drink water out of my glass, he thinks he's so talented!
The only thing he won't ever try again are my saltine crackers! I had them out one day and he got ahold of one and he never has tried them again! So there's one thing he wont eat!!
The only way to get him to stop trying to eat my food is if I'm fixing myself something from the cupboard, I will give him a treat so then he thinks he's getting what I'm getting...until I sit down and he realizes quickly that what I'm eating tastes much better than what he got!

I think Sophie and Harley are soul-mates. She's the same way, in my plate as long as she can reach it. Doesn't matter what I'm eating, she wants her face in it. We don't give her anything but her own food and treats, but she sure tries, anyway!!!

My babies are spoiled. They will stare until someone gives them something off their plate. If you try to ignore those sweet eyes they will sit next to you and stare. If they still don't get what they want they will just help themselves, quickly and with perfect aim. I find that every meal I have I end up sharing whether I want to or not. My oldest cat is the only one with perfect manners, she waits in another room until dinner is over because she knows mommy always brings her some yummies, the others just aren't willing to wait.

Sounds a lot like Hobbes. We never offer him anything, but he somehow manages to find little bits of food (among other things) around the house (probably left from my 5yr old daughter's dinner, etc.). We've seen him eat other non-food items, too, such as plastic and wood.

Sunny, on the other hand, won't eat ANY wet food (except Iams kitten food), and I think we've realized that she will only eat dry food because she likes the crunch. She's the same with kitty treats...if they're soft, she won't touch them...but the crunchy treats, she LOVES!!

Cats are so funny!

My Olga will also try ANYTHING. She is a little piggy. She will see that i am eating something and run as fast as her little legs will carry her to see what it is and get some. She's only 5 months and she is my first cat so i'm curious to see what she likes. So far her favourite was asparagus. I gave her a little to try and she munched it like there was no tomorrow. Bless her little heart.

That's not very strange, at least not in my household!
Serena will eat absolutely anything, too. She'll eat any kind of cheese, mayo, ham, lettuce, spaghetti, potatoes, rice, carrots, beans, and her all time favourite: bugs! She's not very picky, and, like you, I still haven't found anything she doesn't like! Cats are strange and wonderful creatures, aren't they?!
