Will vets spay a cat who is in heat?

I am taking her to get spayed on Tuesday but in the meantime what can I do at night to help her? Cuz I was up til 3am last night because my male who is neutered he was on top of her doing you know what. I tried locking her up but she just meowed and meowed

Why would a neutered male get on top of a kitty in heat and do you know what anyways lol.

I don't know about other countries but the UK won't. When i asked my vet as to why?, she said it makes it more difficult to remove the the organs and they have been known to fall apart in the process.

At the kitty's beck and call
Susan's right - I was told that increased blood supply to the womb causes danger for the kitty when doing the operation.

She will yowl, but it will only be for a few days. Believe me, I understand that being around a kitty in heat is not a pleasant experience, but it is a good incentive to get her spayed quick smart!!!

Yes, vets will spay a cat in heat...though it will probably cost more. Ask your vet to be sure.

About a neutered male mounting a kitty in heat...hey, mine did it, too. He looked very confused, too. They won't mate, persay, (at least not successfully) but I think it's that he has the instinct that her doing that means he has to mount her (whether he knows what to do from there, or not). Strange how instinct works. We joke that Sunny convinced him to do it...he looked so VERY confused as to what on EARTH he was doing!!

No worries...it's not something bad...he's just doing what he's been wired as a cat to do.

Well, the only thing I would worry about is that male cats are not just wired to MOUNT a female when she's in heat, but to spray the place up, too. I would separate them, so he doesn't decide it's ok to spray, even though he is now neutered. Once he starts (being now neutered), there's no real guarantee he'll stop once she's fixed.

Hope this helps!

Cats are in danger if spayed while they're in heat, because during heat, the uterus' blood vessels are swollen. To put it in simply into perspective, a uterus is basically shaped like a Y, with the ovaries being at the top of the Y. In a spay procedure, the vet ties suture around the stump at the bottom of the uterus and at the top above the two ovaries, to stop the flow of blood from these vessels. Like a tourniquet, if you will. Then he cuts above the stump and below the ovaries to remove the uterus. What remains are the three sutured parts. When the uterus is removed, the swelling starts to go down in the remaining parts soon after the procedure. As the swelling goes down, the sutures can slip off the once swollen tissue. This allows the blood to flow out of the vessels, causing the cat to bleed to death. It's like taking the tourniquet off a bleeding arm, basically. Also, the tissue IS more delicate to work with, more likely to tear at a crucial time, like when it's being stretched to pull it out. It's recommended by my clinic to wait 6 weeks after the heat ends to do the spay procedure. It's NOT impossible to spay while in heat or even pregnant, just more risk is involved, and that is why. I hope this wasn't too confusing, and maybe helped you understand?

My vet did the spay just a few days after my cat's heat ended. She said, if we waited, the cat could very well come back into heat. When the kitten who lived upstairs came into heat, she went into another heat 2 weeks after the first on ended.

And I had the same problem with poor Sam, who was neutered as a kitten, who would stand over Bailey, and then just look confused, like "now what?" It made me laugh, I would tell Bailey, he's trying to help, he just can't.

It was awful, neither Sam nor I got a full night's sleep for a week. Sam always slept on my bed, and when I would wake up, so would he, and we'd both go to see if we could make Bailey feel better.

On the positive side, I had only had her for two weeks, and they were being slowly introduced, but this meant that they got to "know" each other pretty quickly.

Rosie - there are vets in the UK that will spay a cat while they are in season -my vet does although my neighbour told me last year vets couldn't because it was too dangerous, so when I booked my foster in to be spayed I asked and was told it didnt matter. Also the foster my vet spayed this year was still in season - they do charge more as it is a trickier procedure and there is more 'mess'. The problem with waiting till they aren't in heat is that some cats can come back into heat very quickly again, so the cat may become pregnant.

At the kitty's beck and call
Our Vet booked an appointment for us the next week, estimating that she would have finished her heat cycle then. It was booked on the understanding that if she was still calling that day, we could ring up and cancel and they would reschedule that week when she had stopped calling. They were very understanding.
