Sick Kitty

My 5 month old kitten Buddy came home with us 3 weeks ago from the animal shelter. About 1 1/2 weeks ago he started sneezing just once in a while, I thought nothing of it. I took him to the vet today to get a booster shot. He told me that he had URI. He has a very mild runny nose, not too much. He is eating, and still playing alot. He is drinking water and acting pretty normal. The vet did not give me anything to treat him. He just told me to keep an eye on him and to call if he starts acting sick or lethargic. My last cat I had was given antibiotics to treat her, but she was worse. I was just wondering if it was okay for him not to be on medication, or if I should go to another vet. He seems okay right now, I just want to be sure. He didn't give him his booster shot either, he said he would give it next week or 2 once the URI clears up.

I commend your vet for taking the appropriate action - he didn't prescribe antibiotics because it doesn't sound like they are indicated. Remember that antibiotics are only effective at treating bacterial infections. They do absolutely nothing for viral infections. So, unless your kitty's nose starts running green, then letting the virus run it's course is the proper way to treat.

Best of luck and I do hope your little one is feeling better quickly,

Absolutely. Keep her warm and ensure she drinks plenty, like you would a child with a cold. Antibiotics are only used to fight any bacterial infection that might interfere with the body's own immune system as it battles with the virus.

Thank YOu Guys! I was just worried, because some things that I read said that they should be on antibiotics, other articles say just let it run its course. I was just concerned. I want him to get better not worse. He seems okay right now, and maybe I am worrying for nothing. But I am concerned about his illness, just like when my kids get sick. Thanks for all your imput!!!!
