GOOD GRIEF. Steve and I are looking for future breeders to possibly get our stud Basset hound from. So Far i have made a few contacts..one was through the AKC website..where they have a little form they have to check off and such. One of the questions, is about Hip and eye certifcation, which IMO all breeder dogs should have. with Hip Displasyia (sp) being such a big deal, and with basset's they have eye issues alot. One gal said "no we dont and we only guarentee pet quality" when i had asked her point blank if her dogs were breeder/Show quality. Red flag. I thanked her for her time, and went away from that one.

Than another one has an ad, has her email listed. So i emailed she says yes they are breeder quality..i ask for photos..oh she has no photos. but they are registered
yeah i am just gonna plop down the money for a dog site unseen. when i asked about Hip and eye certifcation.. here is the extact reply! "As far as hip and eye certification, I don't know what you are talking about." DOH...do you have any buisness breeding dogs if you dont know what that is? Mesa thinks not..
of course it stated in their add that they WERE..*fumes*

(see this is the way the AKC words it. . The applicable health screens have been performed on the sire and dam as recommended by the Parent Club for this breed. (AKC recommends you ask about health issues as discussed on the web pages of the respective AKC Parent Club. )

and they said yes

IMO you are right to consider certification an important aspect. There have to be breeders out there who respect this, right???

I sure would hope so. Athenas breeder does. but she is no longer breeding. she had a small kennel, and her male..produced a pup with a blue eye with is a no no in bassets so she had him neutered

What a bunch of dopes.........You should report them for false advertising...IMO they probably shouldnt be breeding dogs at all if they don't understand basic breeding procedures...geeeze......

I am with you Scamper - anyone without certification is a by breeder in my boos. Hiow else do you get the proper pedigree and know the health background of the dog???? I do fear more and more backyard breeders are out there now though but surely through dog shows and the registries you can find a reputable breeder?

I completely think it's a good idea to make sure they have any and all certifications you want them to have! After all, this is going to be a member of your family for life! Good luck finding someone!

I don't like the way you said about the photos, not everyone has a camera you know!

But anyway I don't know much about the legal side of dogs so I wont comment on that.

Thats true. But if your advertising on a national website..generaly people do assume you will have photos. before I had a digital i would take photos on a dispose and have them developed onto a cd at walmart. yay technology
