Long story short, I kept my cat in an apartment building that I knew didnt allow cats bec I had moved from CA to KS and had seen other animals in the apartments, I recently got caught with her and was told to remove her. She is a member of my family and I really dont want to give her away but we are stuck in a 1 yr lease and will lose $500 security dep if I dont. I have been told about foster familys that look after the cat until you find another home - you pay for food etc. Does anybody know anything about this or can offer other alternatives? We only moved here 3 months ago and dont know anybody here yet so I dont even have family or friends that could take her.

Any advice is appreciated...

Oh I wish I could help. Don't give up. There is no one anywhere that could make me give up my kits, so keep fighting.

Have you tried asking around at work? Or your husband's work?

You might also try Vet's offices (see if you can leave a flyer up).

Yes I've asked everywhere I can, I have a friend in Oregon that really wants her but the cost of shipping her is ridiculous. AND on top of all of this I dont want to give her up, but it seems I am being left with no other option....

Hi, just wondering what airlines you tried as the costs for flights vary greatly between them. I flew my 2 cats together in a huge carrier all the way from Mobile, AL to Winnipeg, MB Canada back in June this year and it only cost $164 thru Northwest Airlines - I must say too, they were absolutely excellent with them and I can't say enough about their pet service.

Best of luck to you! She really is a beauty.

Oh, another thought or two...can you contact your local Humane Society and local no-kill rescues as well? If they know you are willing to pay for boarding, food, medical care, etc, they may assist you in finding a foster or be more willing to give you any available space for her that they might have open.

If I was closer (Wisconsin) I would keep her for you until you had found another place that allowed pets.

She is just gorgeous! Like a few others, I'm just too far away or I would take her for you! I'm sorry this happened and I hope you get something worked out.

Thank you so much everybody for your replys. So far the cheapest is united with a cost of $150, from kansas city to portland oregon. My friend has offered to either foster her until I can move, or keep her permanently, so I am going to take her up on her offer. First off I need to get Abbys shots up to date!!! money money money sigh..... GAILC is that your name? or were you referring to me? I got confused seeing my own initials in your nickname space!

I think it is well worth $150. If you have to give up your cat, and end up replacing her, it will certainly cost more than $150 to get a new pet, spay or neuter, and get its shots. It sounds like a lot of money...but I think your peace of mind in knowing she is with a friend who will return her is worth a lot, too.

Best of luck. That is one beautiful cat!

funnyily enough since ringing a few days ago their prices seemed to have jumped, its now $160 but could change due to them wanting to weigh and measure her?? Thats with United, with Delta its $172. I have to have all her shots down and get a health certificate too which is an extra $100!!!!!!!! OMG i dont know how I"m going to afford this but I've got no other options sigh... thanks again everybody!

I just got to quotes from two different companies, one quoted me $149 + $25 for a processing fee.... the other quoted me $550!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG how can they do that!!!!
Her colouring is due to her being an Asian Smoke... IF you pull back her fur she is white underneath. Shes absolutely gorgeous, so I'm glad if I give her to my friend in Oregon that she knows its a foster situation and I can get her back when I move.
Thanks for all the replys!

Hi Gail!

I don't want to discourage you but I will tell you that most of the no-kill groups in Kansas City are already overfull. Adoptions have been way down for some reason the last few months and most haven't adopted all of the spring kittens yet. With Hurricane Katrina, most of the local resources are being stretched that way. It will be very hard to find a local group to help you at this time. It's very frustrating.

If airline prices are so high, you may want to reconsider breaking your lease and eating the $500 to keep her. If you fly her to Oregon, you will only have to fly her back in 9 months when your lease is up and overall, you are close in cost to breaking your lease.

I can try to ask around where I work but I've already pushed them for help pretty far already, so no promises. If you send me her picture and a bio, I can get the word out. I'm in the Kansas City area so at least you would be close and could visit.

If my house wasn't so darn full or if it was just a few months, I would take her for you! I will help in any way if I can.

If you find someone to live in your apartment and take over your lease, they shouldn't keep your 500$.
Or so I was told when I had to break my lease.
