I've always suspected that my five month old female kitten was playing in the litter box, laying in the sand and playing with it with her paws. She doesn't have any problems using it but sometimes she likes to play in it. I keep it very clean but I wondered does anyone else have a kitten who plays in the box and is this normal?

I have a stud that's 1 year 3 months and he still does this! But he waits for it to be cleaned (most of the time anyways, I can always smell when he hasn't). I think it's like a mini-massage for them.

Oliver used to roll around in his litter box when he was little--he outgrew it though, chances are yours will too!

My tuxedo does that a lot. She actually likes to watch me cleaning out the litter box, and jump in to play right afterwards. She is only 4 months old now... so I am hoping she would stop sometime. It's nice to see her find something to play, but sometimes when I hug her I can smell the clean litter... just doesn't make me feel comfortable, haha.

My two young kitties do it! Especially when you've just cleaned the litterbox. They just can't stand to have nice neat litter in there. They MUST zip around in the litterbox and make a mess. Very funny to watch.

All my older cats went through a time when they had so much fun playing in the litter box! Now Saraha plays in the litterbox. She goes around and around trying to catch the litter with her paws. I have a covered litter box so they dont send it all over the floor!!!!

My cat Alcott LOVES to dig, but not just in the litterbox. Clothes, shoes, blankets. I think he just likes to burrow. I'm trying to toilet train him so thats another plus of doing so...he would come out of the covered litterbox with litterdust all over his face!

Thanks everyone for telling me that your cats play in the litter box, too. Brandy, my kitten, loves sending sand all over the floor. I don't even think the box has to be cleaned especially, she just loves to play in it. I'm suret bec ause she's very fastitious so I'm glad I have three boxes. They share okay, though. It's funny to watch but a little anoying to clean up sometimes. I'm getting the litter mats that should help control the sand on the floor.

Brandy is definitely entertaining and getting so big, just gfowing, not overweight. Thanks guys. Shelley tPearl my other older cat doesn't like hat

Littermatts? Never heard of that, but it sound good to me!

I need that!!! My kitten jumps into the tub after I showered so she gets her feet all wet and then she'l hopp into the box so that the crumbs sticks all to her feet and then she'll carry it everywere!!! (of course not on purpose) And then it'll stick to my feet and I'll carry it everywere.(
It makes me so mad. I even have litter crumbs in my bed!!!

Any advice?

Josie played in the litter box when she was little. Now she jumps in after I clean it to dig a few times and that's it. Although, she will still kind of dig around and play in it right after I dump it out and put all fresh litter in. She likes Arm & Hammer the best. I don't know if she likes the smell or what, but she throws it all over.

I use the scoopable litter that's tiny little granuals, and after my little one gets done playing in it she comes out with little pebbles in her eyes. Takes me awhile to get them out because she hates her face and eyes messed with! She's such a silly kitten!

Luna use (and to extent still does) a fascination with the Litter box. When she was about 4-6 mos, she would take her clumped poop out of the litter box and well, bat it around. My bf caught her one day and nearly threw up!
Thank goodness she grew out of that stage!LOL
Now she's v. particular about keeping it neat. She'll hop in after Patches or Beauty plops and leaves and bury their doings for them.

FYI - most cats don't like that plastic litter mat. They'll actually avoid it since they have super sensitive feet. I went out and bought a mini bath mat and lay that in front of the litter. Our cats will step on that instead of the litter mat. With the rubber bottom it collects all the kitty litter, but it's still soft enough for their feet. Plus easy to clean since you just vacuum it!

My 2 do. I've found litter in thier fur several times! Mooch used to especially when I'd cleaned it really well, like hosed it out and things. I have a litter mat and in thier kennel I have the box in a box. They were throwing the litter into thier food and water! I hope they grow out of it some!

Char used to do that and I found it odd but funny. He will do it once in a while when I dump the box and put in all new litter too. Silly cat!
