On my street, there is only 6 houses, including mine. A few years ago, the one neighbor noticed this beautiful fluffy gray kitty roaming around. He started feeding the cat and even had the Mobile Vets come to check the cat out. Everything seemed fine with him, so this man paid for the cat's vaccinations and to have him neutered. He named the cat Charlie. Now, even with all the expense this neighbor had put into the cat, Charlie made it clear that he wasn't about to domesticated, so Charlie would roam the neighborhood by day, and then spend part of his evening inside the neighbor's house to eat, and rest a little, but usually, he'd beg to go back out well before a decent time in the morning. This was the routine for the last 4 years, or so. All of us neighbors got used to seeing Charlie around, and we'd put food out for him as well, especially during the winter months.
Well, about 6 months ago, this neighbor decided to move. He was concerned that if he tried taking Charlie with him, that Charlie would just make the trek back to "his turf". So, he asked all of us neighbors if we'd look after Charlie. This man continued coming back every month to apply flea/tick medicine on Charlie. He came other times as well, but he definitely was here to apply the medication as well as to just make sure everything was okay with Charlie.
Well, Charlie took to another neighbor and started doing the same routine that he used to do with the old neighbor. Roam all day, come in the evenings for a little, start meowing to go back out around 3 a.m..
Well, today, I'm coming home and noticed a fluffy cat dead on the side of the road. Praying to God that Please don't let it be Charlie, I knock on the neighbor's door and ask if he's seen Charlie lately. He says he didn't see Charlie last night, which he felt was odd, but thought maybe Charlie just got busy gallavanting and decided to come home too late to be let in.
The neighbor and I go back up to check out the cat I had seen and
he confirmed that it was Charlie.

We buried him in the flower bed that he liked to lay in a lot when he was waiting for the neighbor to come home.
Charlie may have been classified a stray, but he was all of ours cat. He will be missed.

I'm so sorry...but how wonderful that the whole community adopted this cat....I'm sure he knew he was loved.

Good-bye, Charlie! You will be greatly missed. Condolences to each of the kind people in the little neighborhood, who watched out for Charlie, yet let him be his own man. If only more of the world was like your little corner!
