I have a bit if a unique situation going on here right now. I have a two year old mother cat and her first born female kitten who is now a one year old cat. The mother has had another litter two weeks ago(yes we are getting them both spaded ASAP) and her one year old has just had a litter last night. They get along very well and really love each other.

Recently the older mother took her kittens from where she had them 2 weeks ago in our room and moved them under the bed for no apparent reason. Now last night the younger mother had her litter under the same bed right next to Moms and her litter of kittens. They seem to be getting along and all but I am a bit nervous not knowing if this is OK and if we should let this continue as is or move them to separate places or rooms? They seem to be sharing motherly duties and the kittens are trying to feed (they are sometimes) from both mothers. What should be done, let them alone and observe or separate right away?

Please if anyone knows what should be done here chime and and let me know it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Donny and Kim

Your cats will move their nest several times. They move them if to many people are handling the kittens, or coming over to look at them, and that also includes if you are.

They move them to warmer spots. They move them if the nest becomes to soiled and smelly. Or they will take one kitten, it it is ill and move it away from the others as a sort of sacrifice to the predators to keep the rest of the kittens safe.

As long as there is no issues, that should be fine...but my only recommendation is that you try to keep them in one room if possible with litterboxes, food and water. At this time, they both should have no access outdoors (even accidentally) or you will find that they go back into heat and become pregnant again. Also, I would keep an eye out on whether they are moving all the kittens or leaving one behind. Cat's will move kittens away from a sick kitten so you will need to watch to see whether one is being abandoned by it's mother and take it to the vet. I know you intend to get both mothers' spayed (THANK YOU) but I would set up the appt. now for when the kittens are around 8 weeks of age. Again, it will be critical that both mother's remain indoors only until they are spayed. Here is a list of low cost cliniics if you need one:

Wow this is so nice of you. I want to thank you very much for this quick, kind and informative response. Just wondering and not that its a big issue but do any of these accept spade certificates from Friends of animals.com or should i just make an appointment without sending them my money for the discount first? OK now looking I can see these are already discounted clinics, so i should just call one of them, right? Again thanks in advance.

Don't worry we either find A1 owners and homes for our kittens or keep them. But spade for both is now a must. We do understand the concern.

You are very welcome...here to help. I don't know if any of them accept certificates from Friends of Animals...but it's worth calling them to 1. find out what their price is and 2. (if it is more expensive than a certificate from Friends of Animals) whether they will accept the certificate. Also...ask if they will give a discount if you bring in 2 female cats (it's worth a try).

There is a really good PDF called "how to find homes for homeless pets" which gives advice on how to place ads and has a sample contract (that would be useful when placing the kittens). You can find it here:

http://www.natewood.net/Rehome.html

It's in PDF format and takes a few minutes to open.

If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to post them here...lots of friendly people who have found themselves in similiar situations and the moderator has a ton of experience.
