why is when the customers pay for something they always seem to put there change on the counter
a few coins ok i can handle that but when they put $2 or more and make me pick it up that really get my fathers all ruffled i do not have long finger nails to pick it up and while there doing that i stick my hand out real fast so they will put it in my hand But do they put it in my hand NO they stick it on the counter so what do i do
i take my time and pick up one coin at a time

I wonder how rude it would be if i put there change on the counter

It's actually normal for some cultures (Japanese and Korean I know for sure) to put change on the counter, it's considered rude to touch customers hands. Generally they have little bowls that customers put their money into and the clerks put their change in.

But I think it's annoying when people put more than $1 worth of change down anyway.
I've heard some horror stories from when a friend worked for a large video rental chain of customers paying for things in pennies...

In most states, believe it or not, paying for anything over a dollar in all pennies is considered harassment and the person can be taken to jail! My husband worked at a video store when he was in high school, he has many funny stories from that job!

Were they counting it out? It's probably easier for them to count out if they can see it all out on the counter. Can you just round them up with your hand and drag them to the edge till they fall off in your other hand?

I worked in various shops when I was younger, and people who did that really annoyed me. You hold out your hand, and they put the money on the counter, no need for it. It's not people who are counting it out, that is understandable, but people who just dump it as matter of course. I find it quite insulting actually, almost as if the customer is looking down on you, and not even showing you the respect to place the money in your outstretched hand!

I believe that change over a certain amount is not counted as legal tender in this country, as in if somone tried to pay a £10 bill with pennies, you'd have every right to refuse to accept it.

What about small children who save their pennies - and other coins? I do not want to be a contrarian here but as a child, we often saved our coins to purchase items (not $10 worth mind you, that does seem excessive) and the clerks were more than kind and happy to see us. (Many clerks discriminate against children anyway - not just my opinion, that has been found in study after study). You have to consider that some children live in rural areas and my not be able to get to a bank to roll up their coins.

In Canada, we have toonies and loonies so we HAVE to deal with change whether we want to or not. And certainly prior to the Eiro being adopted in Ireland, there were all sorts of change there.

I never drop coins on the counter unless by accident in which case I pick them up - or help the clerk pick them up. I think courtesy and politeness goes both ways. I HAVE worked as a clerk too - while in university and I never really cared how ppl gave me money, as long as tbey were not rude. What DOES irk me is when clerks try to pawn off torn money on me - money which can be classifued as not legal tender any longer, it is so ragged. Now, I give it back and refuse to accept it, politely of course.

Ooooh...this was one of my BIGGEST pet peeves when I worked at grocery stores. You put your hand out and they dump it on the counter...I too was SO tempted to dump their change on the counter too. I think it's extremely rude to ignore the outstretched hand and make the cashier pick it all up. After all my years working as a cashier, if I pay in cash i try to put all the bills lined up and make sure I put the change in their hand.

This is something I, too, have always considered rude. I'm very careful to never do it to anyone, because it always frustrated me when I worked retail and someone would do it to me.

That does not seem to be plausible. Most likely it is the shop owners who has the power to decide the form of payment he wants rather than payment over a certain amount suddenly making it not legal tender. It operates on the same idea as some shops rejecting notes above a certain value.

Actually I prefer it if they place it on the counter, especially if it is a mixture of coins and notes. That way I do not have to juggle my wallet and cash.

I worked in a gas station for a couple of years when I turned 18. I got annoyed at this too, but only when the people put dollar bills on the counter instead of in my hand. I found it easier to count change when it was dropped on the counter anyway. Another reason I didn't mind it is because sometimes people paid with yucky, sticky change and I preferred to keep that change to the side and out of my register! I was always patient with people who paid with all coins though. Some of them were broke and were searching their cars and sofas for change for gas, milk, or smokes.

When I worked retail I only put thier change down if they asked me to because they were fiddling with thier reciept or something like that. What irked me more was people who would throw thier money or credit cards at you like you were a hired servant or something. But in the end, I just don't think it's something to get worked up over. In most cases, you never see the person again so why let them bring your mood down?

Long ago when I was a cashier at Burger King, about the only really rude thing I remember was when I gave one man his change he took the pennies and THREW them back on the counter at me! His wife tried to apologize saying "He really hates pennies." Well, that's all fine and good, but if he's going to have a conniption fit when he sees them at least have the courtesy of telling the cashier to keep the pennies!

they put the change on the counter for YOU to pick up, but god forbid YOU put their change your giving them on the counter, i guess maybe if you had a lot of change and you had it organized out, it would be easier for the cashier to make sure it was the right amount, but come on now, lol. ever since i've been a cashier and dealt with lamo customers i always try to be paitient and understanding in certain situations. its really great when the customers expect you to know everything there is to know, and your just the cashier, lol. at least i've had some customers blame me for stuff i had nothing to do with! lol.
