Hi,

I took Smokey (5 1/2 months old) to the vet this morning to be neutered. About an hour later they called saying his blood work was fine and since he did not fully drop, they had to go in his abdomen. This Afternoon they called and let me know Smokey was done and everything went good. But they also told me when they were doing the procedure she noticed the left kidney was not normal and found some bubbles on his right kidney. The vet then wanted a second oppinion from another dr and he confirmed it being Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Today has not been a good day!

I was wondering who else has a cat/kitten with PKD. I know he will have to eat food that is easy to digest. Right now he is on Innova. Does anyone know if that is okay? If not, can you tell me what a good food for him is? Thanks so much!

Thank you so much Sharky and Emb_78.

I am picking Smokey up today, and I will talk to the vet.

There are excellent websites about this disease as well as a mailing list you can get on. I have heard the folks there go over the top to help cat owners deal with the best way to handle this situation. Now I just have to find the link-

Here it is-

I will let you know that when I discovered this website the photo gallery though fascinating is a bit graphic and disturbing. It is not about cute kitties, but rather diseased kidneys

It's a genetic condition common to Persian breed. His breeders should know this, becaust that means they are breeding PKD positive cats and that should stop.
Best wishes to little Smokey.

Thanks so much batgirl2good, and huggles.

elizwithcat, thank you. After researching PKD, I found that out. I called the breeder and let her know.

The 2 vets confirmed it was PKD only by seeing the kidneys. We were told we should have a DNA test or ultra-sound done to be sure. We sent for the DNA test, hopefully we find out soon.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. All of us appreciate it! *hugs*

Considering he is a persian, it's almost ceirtanly PKD, but wouldn't hurt to make sure. He only had one kidney affected, and I know people can do just fine with one kidney, so, hopefully, he will be o'key.

What I was told was, they first saw the left kidney and it did not look normal, and they checked the right and found bubbles, they believe it is PKD.

xocats, thank you

Would you mind keeping me posted on how things go with your Smokey? I work with people who have PKD and thier kidneys have failed completely (on dialysis now), and I'm interested to see how your baby does since you caught it early. My heart goes out to you too, as I know adapting to this disease can be a bit difficult (low protein...ewwww to kitties!)

I'm thinking of you!

Good luck with Mr. Smokey

Where in Illinois are you? I know of a great cat-only vet practice in Chicago...let me know if you'd like their info. It can't help to get all the opinions you can, though it does sound like PKD at this point.
