My momma cat (April) had her kittens on July 29th and all is going wuite well. She's a great momma kitty. Lately she has been quite agressive towards my kids. SHe is fine with them holding and playing with the kittens, but she just randomly has been attacking their feet and legs. She has always been a very playful and tempermental cat, but calmed down a lot during pregnancy. Is she just playing? I'm hoping that she's just eager to get back to being a playful little kitty, but what do I do for my kids? I think she may be aggressive by nature because she was simply dumped on my sister's lawn at a couple of weeks old in a garbage bag;therefore, she was separated from her mother too soon. I read that it's good to keep the kittens at least 8 weeks so that they can learn not to bite through play with the mother and other kittens. Is this true? Thanks

Welcome Robyn. It is definately good to keep the kittens until they are 8 weeks of age. As far as your momma cat...she may be going back into heat which could account for why she is being moody and aggressive. I would recommend you schedule her spay date for the end of September which would place her kittens at 8 weeks of age and they should be fully weaned by then. Make sure that April has no access outdoors during this time until she is spayed. If you need a low cost clinic, you can go to the link below and select your state:

If you can keep them till they are 12 weeks old. Then you adopt out fully socialized kittens that know about the litter pan and do not have separation anxiety from being away from their siblings.

Her aggression could be that if she got outside after her kittens were born, even for a little while, she could be pregnant again.

my boyfriend and i were taking care of a kitten and momma cat for a friend...we were gonna keep the momma and give the kitten to his mom. well we were keeping them overnight at our apartment, and we already have a cat, chloe. the momma cat would just randomly attack chloe...like all out fighting. but when chloe wasn't around she was fine and friendly. i think she was just being super protective of the kitten, seeing as all her other kits had found homes. this might be the situation in your house...your momma sees the kids as a "threat" to the kittens, even though they haven't done anything bad to them, ya know? just a thought.

She has calmed down a bit. Yes, she was attackingeven when they weren't messing with the kittens. THe kittens are using the litter boxes and eating kitten food now
although one of them has had an accident on the floor. I'm assuming that happens while learning to use the litter box. I think April may be jealous of all the attention that's given to the kitten (and not so much her anymore). She went from being aggressive to being very loving again. She was sleeping with me when I woke up this morning, which she never did. So I spent a few minutes petting her before I got my kids ready for school. After all, she's still my kitty.

Hey Robyn..that's good to hear that she is back to being loving again. Now would be a good time to set up her spay appt. so you don't have to worry about her going back into heat and becoming pregnant again. The link I originally posted has low cost spay/neuter clinics broken out by state.

My cat is very aggressive toward people, she was also abandoned by her mother. We have had her since March, I did all the things suggested on this board and nothing helped, she still attacks us. My daughter left for school bleeding just this morning. It isn't just the children, I will walk by and she jumps out of hiding to attack my leg. She will be lying on my lap purring and all of a sudden attack my arm. I don't think she will ever change.

So this cat has been seen by a vet?? What did the vet suggest?

I haven't discussed it with the vet, but when she was at the vet the nurses di have to hold her down. She was hissing at them. It seems that she usually gives a warning such as meowing or a hiss if she's really mad before she bites. She sometimes gets in these fits where she runs like mad throughout the house at top speed, and she'll attack someone or something while doing this.
