I can't just send a check and pray. Maybe that says something about my trust in God and Goverment or maybe I believe I'm not alone in wanting to act.
I've sent this letter to our Mayor, local news groups and radio stations and the Salvation Army itself. If I don't hear back by Monday I'll start contacting hotels myself Tuesday. I'll walk into Red Cross and Salvavtion Army and ask them if they will help if we can get people here.

Dear Mayor Gordon,
The victims of Hurricane Katrina are going to need long term shelter. The ones who have nothing to go back to will need an address, beds, showers, privacy, access to communication, schooling for children, jobs for adults.
Could we (the people of Phoenix) ask the 250 + area hotels and resorts to each donate a room or two for long term shelter and set up a fund through Salvation Army, or any worthy charity, to be used specifically for living expenses of transplanted hurricane victims here in Phoenix until these people are once again self sufficient?
If cities across America did this we could be one step closer to helping these victims heal and get back on their feet.
Thank you for your time,
XXXXX

We have a few people in Phoenix doing this too, rent free of course. The thing is maybe a million people will need long term shelter. That's alot of folks.

Wow, MA, I never even thought of using Craigslist (AKA greatest invention since Google) to do something like that!

If I had a home right now, I'd share it.

A woman they had on The View yesterday said it's best that they stay near where they are from because they will set up help there and they need access to it. Also because there could be diseases from the contaminated water and it's better that they stay in the area than spread out around the country.

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
Listen, check if there's some form of Hotel Owners Association of sorts or Landlords association (That is very common as they need someone to lobby for them) and write to them. Maybe they can be of more help.

Wow MA. I just checked out that Craiglist....the hugs numbers of people who posted and are willing to open their homes to complete strangers during this time is beyond heartwarming. Extremely touching
. We have seen some evacuees here in Savannah and, if I had more than a small 1 BR apt., would gladly post there as well.
