Smokeys thread

Hi
My cat Smokey is heavily pregnant (not sure of due date) and feel it will be any day now. Im constantly checking on her and seeing signs that may or may not be there (Im sure all of you have or are expieriencing this anxious time too). So I thought instead of putting bits and bobs on other threads I would start one of her own so that those that are interested can see her progress.

I have just tried to insert an image but havent a clue what to type in the box that popped up so any help would be appreciated.

For the last week Smokey has been like my shadow following me everywhere but the weather has been very hot the last few days so she has taken to hiding in between two armchairs in the living room. She seems slimmer today??? when looking at her from above shes not so wide but her belly seems to be hanging lower. She came out for a stretch just now and then spent 25 minutes cleaning her rear end. This will be Smokeys second litter (she will be getting spayed asap after) She had a very small litter of 2 last time (we was expecting at least 5 she was huge) sadly the female kitten died after only 24 hours and we were left with big boy bandit who now lives with a family member and is a very spoilt kitty. I was with her last time I had thought she would wake me up during the night as she was acting very peculiar but she waited until 7 am on a sunday morning when I had gottten up to use the toilet with every intention of going back to bed but she followed me into the loo and one look at her told me this was really it. I went down stairs with her following and she had the first one pretty much immediatley. Smokey can seem like quite a snob at times and I thought I would have to give her a helping hand but she was brilliant she amazed me how she knew what exactly to do. She was a fantastic mother (fingers crossed for her she copes as well if we end up with more than one which is very likely). I am looking forward to sharing the experience with her again and will update this thread at any changes. Sorry if ive gone on bit but future posts will be nowhere near as long. Ill post pics as soon as I figure out how to do it. Good luck to the rest of you who are waiting and watching as I am.
Off now to stare at her for 20 mins lol.

Hi Hayley,

Looking forward to reading about Smokey and her babies. Good Luck.

With reference to posting up your pictures you need to upload them to some webspace i.e. imagestation etc and then right click on your pictures which will give you their properties, Copy the address (you are looking for the URL address). Then when you click on the image button you need to post this URL into the box which will give you

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for your help emmag
unforunately this was an accidental breeding so I have no idea. But the last time the father was a black and white male he was a huge cat. I suspect he is the culprit again as I live in a very small close and know pretty much all of the cats around here and all other males have been fixed

This is her with Bandit the only we ended up with from her last litter
he is only 8 weeks here he is a very big boy now

and this is him

outer london near heathrow
and yes he was huge he was the only one having her milk all to himself and his dad was a very big cat. Oh the lazy little mare has come out from behind the chairs now and is telling me shes hungry so i best go feed her and the kitties, I can wait to meet them and definatley think theres more than 2 this time. Its very exciting being a grannie to furbabies. The suspense is starting to kill me tho. shes getting the hump with me now so best be off.

Hey Hayley...welcome to TCS. Since there is an intact male roaming around, I would suggest you keep Smokey indoors until she has weaned her kittens and been spayed. Typically, you can schedule the spay appt. for when the kittens are between 6 to 8 weeks of age. Unfortunately, I do not have a list of low cost clinics in the UK, but I'm sure other members can provide resources.

Thanks TNR1 as I already said she will be getting spayed asap I have spoken to the vet and will be calling them once shes had the kitties to arrange an appt after. She is an indoor cat, we moved into a house from a flat and there was already a cat flap installed she didnt use it and it had no cover and the culprit last time actually came into our house to get her. (We have since installed a better flap with cover) This time she managed to escape several times over the last few months but since we discovered she is pregnant have made changes to ensure this will be less likely. as she seems to quite like going outside I will be doing all I can to keep her inside until she is spayed and have also spoken to the owners of the culprit that definately got her last time about having him neutered.

That is excellent news. I must have missed the thread referring to the fact that you were planning to have her spayed..but do understand your situation. Glad to hear you have also spoken to the owner of the intact male....chances are, he has fathered other litters in the area (those men do know how to get around).

Right well I think Im verging on going crazy now. Woke up at 6.30am which is very early for me considering kids are off school and all still sleeping and my first thought (as has been for last few days) was Smokey and couldnt get back to sleep for thinking about her. So I had to get up. She was in her normal spot at the back of my 2 armchairs and she didnt come rushing out to see me as she normally does. I tried to coax her out but she werent budging til I put down some food. Her stomach is rock hard and after eating she has gone back behind the chairs. Now Im checking there every 2 mins and shes just sleepy. Maybe shes just tired. Today might be the day fingers crossed. Or its another day of me being convinced its happening and ill be watching her still tommorow. It is driving me crazy now.

When Smokey had her first litter she only had 2 babies one died 24 hours after, When I rang the vet to see if there was something that couldve caused it she asked about how short the cord was cut by mum. the one that died had no cord left it had healed over but the vet said this might have caused an infection leading to her death.
My query is should I try to assist her with the cutting of the cords this time to avoid this happening again or should i just let her get on with it??

right going to sit and stare at her again now.
Hmmm starting to think possibly she keeps going to hide cos shes fed up with me fussing over her lol I'll try to be less obvious today and see if she comes out lol.

decided to move one of the chairs as the temperature has dropped over the last few days and as I have a wooden floor and she seems most likely to have her babies behind the chairs on the floor. I wanted to put something down on the floor so if she does theyre not on the cold floor. Shes my friend again yippeee she came out when i pulled the chair out and has started following me again. She even nuzzled my hand while I was stroking her and shes never done that before. She allowed me to massage her tummy and purred louder than Ive ever heard her. the babies are less active today but still moving. My poor Smokey she looks very uncomfortable bless her but shes allowed me to give her coat a good brush and looks as well and happy as can be expected though im sure if she was a woman shed be swearing at me and demanding i skivvy after her all day. She keeps looking into my eyes and i can tell shes scared bless her I keep talking to her giving her reassuring words and she settles a bit then. Its going to be soon Definately by the end of the weekend...... I hope....... fingers crossed.
