We have two big ol' Toms running our neighborhood (residential neighborhood, inner city), one is a Tux and looks just like the male kitten Piper just had, the other is an orange tabby. I have asked around and no-one claims these cats but we do have several apartment complexes in the neighborhood.
The Toms are either feral or they just don't like me, but I have put a self feeder and self water dish out and the Tux is now eating in my yard but will bolt if I open the door. I'm pretty sure neither cat is spayed because they half kill each other if they cross paths and we have too many stray kittens in our neighborhood with no other adult males noticed.
One of my neighbors has taken to trapping strays/ferals and taking them in to be euthinized. She had taken 5 in at last count.
My question is....
What are my obligations of trying to find the owners of these Toms before I try to TNR one or both of them? The orange hangs about a block over so I could ask the homeowners there for help in trapping him and I may be able to catch the Tux here in my yard.
What do I do if I catch a non-collared or stray and not the targeted Toms? I don't want to be sued.
