Then what? Mooch and Noodles have taken to jumping on top of my entertainment center. I've removed most of the breakable things but I'd kind of like to keep my wedding pictures out! They also drink from the fish tank and sit on top of it. I can be sitting on the couch next to the fish tank and saying 'no' in a firm, low, commanding voice and they don't even flinch. Now if I get up and go over they will move. I'm getting tired of having to do that. So does anyone else have any training suggestions? I'm lost and frustrated right now. I feel like I have to stay in the room with them all the time.

Hi Mooch,

WATER GUN

I highly highly recommend this. The best way is to make sure they don't see YOU actually firing it because then they learn to associate YOU with the activity...you're best bet (I hate to say it) is to walk around with your water gun stuck in your pocket or belt loop and when they do it, give em a good spritz.

They will very quickly learn NOT to do that.

I really want to avoid water. They already get baths more often than most cats because of my husband's allergies. I don't need them to resist me more because I've made them frightend of water. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess it might have to be a 'last resort'.

Hi! I am new here but firmly believe that all cats are trainable, as long as they don't now they are being trained! I would try a spray bottle which you can ajust to a stream or spray (with water). This way you have control over your distance and this is not recognized as something only used for them since we use spray bottles to clean all the time. Use this method with your comand, then eventually you should'nt have to use the bottle and when they respond respectfully give them a treat. A favorite treat I have found to be very popular with cats is Pounce!
Sometimes they only want us to do what they want when they want, but I have found the best relationships with animals is when there is equal respect because they want to make us happy as much as we want to make them!
Goodluck!

I noticed that you want to avoid water. Is there anything that gets their immediate attention such as a hair dryer or vacum? These items can replace the use of water, but always remember to reward when they follow your vocal command!

Something else to try would be to make a loud noise as soon as they jump up on where they aren't supposed to be. Try putting a bunch of pennies in a coffee can and when they jump up shake it nice and hard!!

Clicker-train clicker-train clicker-train.

Are they tempted by food treats? If they are you will be on a winner with clicker-training it will work in no time.

It's how I trained Sashka to stay off the benches when nothing else worked!

Can someone explain this a little more? I'm have a general idea of how this works but I don't know where to start.
