My female cat (shes part stray, part ours, if that makes sense) has just had a litter of 5 kittens, 5 days ago. The kittens seem to be doing really well, except that one is smaller than the others, and also they seem to fight a lot.

Today, she started moving the kittens into the cupboard under our fishtank, she moves half of them there and leaves 1 or 2 in the old nursery area - is this ok for the kittens? At one point she had left 2 of the kittens in the cupboard and gone back to nurse the others, but one of the 2 managed to crawl out and was scrabbling around on the hard floor the poor love!

I really want to intercede and lock her in the old nursery room where its safer and the kittens are in an enclosed, warm and large area. Will she react badly to this? I'm really scared that she'll eat the smallest kitten, after reading some of the threads on here!

I generally leave the cat alone with her babies, but if she is moving some kittens and not the others, it is easy for one kitten to get chilled, or miss a feeding. This is very detrimental to the kits. I would limit her area, so she keeps the kits together.

I think the only way a mother eats a kitten is if she feels something is wrong with it. A father cat or older sibling may harm the babies, but the Mom's instinct is mostly to care for the babies.

Chupi...I agree that moving into a smaller/enclosed area where she would feel safe is a good idea. Also, I would move her food, water and litterbox closeby so she won't have to travel away from her kittens to eat or use the litterbox.

At this point, she and her kittens need to remain indoors only until the kittens have been weaned and the mom cat has been spayed. If you need a low cost spay clinic for when mom weans the kittens, just click the link below and scroll down until you find your state. There is a list of many low cost clinics listed.

ok, thanks. I think I will try and keep her within these 2 rooms, she is now next door to the nursury where the litter and food are.

Thanks!
