There have been a couple of times that a certain Urban legend page/Myth busting page has come up in conversation around here. Unfortunately I can't remember what it is, or when it was mentioned for the life of me.
Dad and I are looking for tested proof that anti-hiccup solutions don't work. Mom's of the opinion that drinking sugar water rids one of hiccups. I'm of the opinion mom's silly.
Anyone know what page I'm talking about OR have a good one for me to visit?

www.snopes.com is the best Urban Legend site on the web, hands down.

This is going to sound very strange, but it has worked many times for me. A friend showed it to me once when I had the hiccups. When someone is hicupping, cup your hand in front of their mouth, palm up, and order them firmly to hiccup in your hand. I guess it is the shock value, but it usually works.

Movin' on up!
For hiccups, take a slice of lemon, sprinkle it with a dash of Angostura bitters and eat it. Cured my ex (dang it!)

HIccups is some sort of malfunction (harmless) that happens with your diaphram.... what I do is just hold my breath and swallow a few times.. usually for about 30 seconds... gives my diaphram time to get over whatever made me hiccup in the first place.
Somtimes I have to do it twice but it always does the trick. (so does drinking a tall glass of water, but again, it stills your diaphram)

Well, sorry to disappoint you but eating a spoonful of white sugar ALWAYS gets rid of the hiccups!!! Every time, without fail. It is the most definitive cure I've ever seen and it WORKS!!!! Lol.....

It just doesn't make sense. BigOrangeMenace is right, it is a malfunction of the diaphram. The trick is just to calm the muscle down that's spaziming. Yes, drinking a glass of water or holding your breath can help because it stops the stimulus from effecting the muscle for a period of time. Some people (like my mom) get themselves so stressed out about having hiccups in the first place that they can't relax enough to make the muscle stop. Past that I'm not sure how any of the other cures work...medically.
I couldn't find anything about myth/legend busting of hiccups on the net. I'm rather disappointed, but I also don't know how one would test such a thing.
<---oh my! I actually found a use for the einstein emoticon! I'm so excited!
