They are beautiful, but I could never have one.. There are too many unwanted cats out there for me to go to a breeder

Very nice. But then, I may be slightly prejudiced
! My breeder had some dilute calicos recently, and there was a nice little tortie female that she had there when we went to pick up the boys.

That's a calico overload
in that pic!

Those who know us know that we are obsessed by the Turkish Van. If you want to see a classic, here are some of our Samwise. We will apologize that a couple of these were posted elsewhere on TCS, but they may be new to some of you. Those who know us also know that we jump at a chance to show Samwise off. And the same for Galadriel, coming to join us soon.

We must say, however, that while the Maine Coon is a beautiful breed, and we have admired them for years at cat shows, we might question saying that they resemble the Turkish Van very much, but of course this is a subjective observation. We think that they are both very lovely breeds, but each in their own way.

So -- here are a few selections from our Samwise album.

All the very best,

Jim & Ann

Turkish vans...maine coons....all so sweet and fluffy!!

Ian's mom has a purebred turkish van that she rescued from a BYB that got her from a breeder and wanted, just because the cat had papers, to breed her and sell her kittens for money!!! So Ian's mom...being a friend of hers...talked her down from breeding and eventually into giving her Ethel! But, she is one of the most beautiful kitties I have ever seen. Vans and Maine coons...they just have the best tails ever...oh wow.

And I must say, the calico MC's are just gorgeous!

Samwise says, "Awwww gee, thank you."

Actually, "sweetness" was not the thing when those photos were taken. They were taken near the end of the second long day of a cat show, and Sam was tired and just generally fed up with the show and cat shows in general. Then he was asked to pose and look regal for the photographer.

He was M-A-D! We were lucky to get a decent photo at all. Somewhere around 30 proofs led to the selection of 5 as "keepers." One of the marks of a Turkish Van is that when they get mad their noses turn red. It never fails to put you on notice. Witness, Sam's nose in the head shot.

Samwise says he is very happy now that he need not go to any more cat shows, that he is not really as bad as we say he is, and he appreciates your kind remarks.

All the best,

Ann & Jim

During my youth we had a DSH that had the Van pattern, not a Van of course, just the pattern. I still have a soft spot for it
. Turkish Vans actually have longer hair than I'd thought, and are also a heavier body type. I'd thought the body type would be closer to Turkish Angora. Thank you for showing us the pix!

Aww.. he does look pissed.. lol! his nephew clucks "hello, uncle Samwise!" I was merely intimating that they have a similar more poufed muzzle and very round eyes typical of vans. and tails!

You are absolutely right about the Vans. Actually, I believe that the Turkish Van gave rise to the pattern referred to as "van," which you will see in many a breed.

The Turkish Van has a much heavier body and strong muscles than does the Turkish Angora. They are two distinct and separate breeds. Sometimes we attribute the Van's big strong muscles to their swimming in the wild, but, who knows? We do know for sure that they use those muscles to jump unbelievable distances, straight up, without a running start. If they cannot jump all the way up to their goal then they will climb up the rest of the way like a monkey.

The Van is assuredly a longhair. Their coat is distinct, I believe, in not having an undercoat, and its rabbit-like texture, along with an oily component, aid in keeping it afloat when swimming.

Best,

Jim

Samwise says, "Howdy, nephew. Long time no see. How are you faring? I'm so glad my Dad brought me back to TCS, and I'm looking forward to chatting with you, your Mom and your buddies. I'm expecting my sister, Galadriel, aka 'Holly,' to join us at the beach in a couple of weeks, and I will introduce you."

the little booger!
Charming! There's absolutely no question about the heritage of Ghibli. I am convinced that you could dye a Van purple, thereby concealing his giveaway markings, and you would still recognize him for what he is through his distinct weird activities.

Samwise says "Hi," upside down atop the refrigerator, with his legs carefully inserted into a wine rack, knowing that we daren't move him for fear of scattering broken wine bottles over the kitchen floor. We have decided that he is not as dumb as he looks.

But we are probably deluding ourselves ----
