I have a male kitten that I adopted 2 weeks ago. The Shelter told me is was 4 months old (although I am not sure if their paperwork had been updated since they picked him up as a stray)The shelter found him on 7/27/05, and I adopted him Aug 15th. I am assuming that he is now 5 months old. But he is much bigger than my friends cat which is supposed to be the same age. I know that different cats grow at different rates, and it is different between male and females. But he seems pretty big, I looks bigger than 6 months to me, but I could be mistaken. How can you tell the age of your cat, or is it just a guessing game?

A friend once told me that you could count the rings around his tail, as with a tree, but I really question his advice.

I would suspect that there is no good answer to your question for a cat which is between kittenhood and old age.

Cheers,

Jim

The vet can probably help, when you take him in for his check-up. Some cats are just much bigger than others-as adults the weight can range from about 6 to 15 pounds, I believe. So similar aged kittens can have quite different sizes.

The vet should be able to tell by the teeth I think. Maybe they can check that out next time you go?

I posted aimilar question recently, and was told that the vet will (at least for a very young kitten) look at a combination of teeth, weight/size and development.
I know, it's frustrating not to know, isn't it!

According to the group we adopted PJ from, she should be about 11 by now. The vet, however, says she has the teeth of a much younger cat - he asked if she was 4 or 5!! Her blood work (hyperthyroidism) is indicative of an older cat... but we really have no idea how old she is!
