A few days ago, I posted to ask "Is Kiera pregnant?"... I'm assuming she is by her nipples and belly. Now we have morning sickness to add to the mix !

Yesterday and today she had been very nauseous. She ate a little yesterday, threw that up. Gave her some kitten glop, threw that up too. Ate more later in the day and once again, threw that up. She has not eaten since some time yesterday and I'm not sure if she has drank any water (it's so hot here - could just be evaporation). She seems to be licking her lips alot - it looks like when a person if nauseous and your mouth gets all watery so you have to keep swallowing.

Any suggestions ? I was going to give her kitten glop but if she's just going to throw up, then maybe hold off on it ? Boiled chicken with rice ? Vet ?

Help !

Vet- the pregnant cats I have cared for never vomited. The licking of the lips shows her stomach is upset. If you have some plain yogurt with active cultures, give her a lick or two but otherwise, my vote is the vet.

I agree with Hissy - while a little bit of morning sickness is normal during the early stages, it isn't an all day thing where they cannot keep anything at all down. The lip-smacking is a sure indication her tummy is very upset. Go ahead and get her into the vet and let us know how she's doing.

Called vet - they can't see her until friday morning but will keep me posted if they have any cancellations. I gave her a bit of plain yogurt which she sniffed then ignored. She purrs when you pet her but if not "herself" (doesn't come to be petted, doesn't roll onto her back so I can rub her tummy) even though I've only known her for 5 days (foster). I'll try her with the kitten milk since at least I know she likes that and see if it stays down.

I'll keep you posted !

Update - she ignored the kitten milk too (which she loves). She actually turned her head in the opposite direction when I offered as though the smell was just too much for her...

What do you think - is she OK til friday or should I try a different vet that might have room today ?

If I were you I might try a different vet just to be safe. Call and see what they advise and if they want to see her, best to take her in and let them assess the situation. Best of luck. I know this is very concerning for you.

Just back from the vet ! (that was fast !)

It's probably just a cold. It's irritating her nasal passages and throat and that's why she's throwing up. Her temperature is normal. However, it could be a bunch of other things too. All the other things require blood test, etc to confirm.

Now the part that has me upset is that the vet still cannot confirm she is pregnant. Her uterus does feel slightly enlarged but he can't feel any foetuses in it. She could either a) be pregnant b) have a large uterus or c) it's due to an infection. Remember that a week ago, the SPCA vet couldn't confirm she was pregnant but "thought she was" so they placed her with me.

Now I am a foster family for what I thought to be a pregnant cat. I signed on willing to pay for medical expenses for the momma and her litter should she require it. I am a bit ticked of at the SPCA for giving me a cat that was so barely pregnant (if at all) that she could easily have been spayed and that would have solved the problem (pregnancy or infection) thereby alowing a cat that really needed a temporary home to get one.

What I don't want is to pay hundreds of dollars in vet fees and tests only to find out 3 weeks down the road that Nope - she was never pregnant to start with and now that she's all healthy she can return to the shelter to be put up for adoption. On the other hand, if she is pregnant then that's what I volunteered for...

Any suggestions ?

Why can't you go ahead and get her spayed?

Also, have you talked to the SPCA about this? Did you know if they had any particular reason for giving you this kitty?

It's up to you....unless the shelter saw her mate..there isn't a good way to tell if she is pregnant until she is further along. I agree with the question from eatrawfish...does the shelter not believe in spaying cats if they think the cat is pregnant?? Problem is...as you are finding out..without knowing for sure...you could be fostering a cat that isn't pregnant. But I don't understand why you are ticked with the SPCA...if the vet doesn't know...how would the SPCA know??

The way I see it you have 2 choices:

1. Continue to provide for this cat and wait it out until you know more.

2. Bring her back to the shelter and ask if there is another cat that is further along that needs to be fostered.

Called and spoke to the SPCA. If they have any indication that the cat may be pregnant, they do not spay. Weird huh ? If they spay right away, they only have one cat up for adoption but they don't so first they have to find a foster and then homes for the mum and the kittens.

I guess that's why I was a bit ticked with the SPCA. If you're "not sure she's pregnant", why not solve the problem right away by spaying her instead of waiting to see and possibly contributing the cat population. Keep the limited foster homes for cats that really need it.

I can't have her spayed myself as she does not belong to me. She belongs to the SPCA.

Out of curiosity, can someone tell me the approximate cost of spaying a cat in whatever area you're in ? Just to have my cats teeth cleaned and detartered, it's 185$ (due to the anaesthetic). I assume spaying would be more than that. (Can't remember what it was for my cats - long ago)

In the meantime, I will definately keep her for a few more days until she is (hopefully) feeling better and keeping food down. I certainly don't want to bring her back to the shelter while she is sick (if it can be helped) so she can recouperate in her room for now. I'll see what I do after that... They have a few more families and 1 pregnant momma that need families right now too.

Off to visit Kiera !

Unfortunately Humane Societies (like the SPCAs) are as fallible as anyone else, I get particularly frusterated by the one in my area, but for other reasons.

The area I am in is so high kill that there are a lot of low-cost clinics to try and help reduce the population. We even have one call "Animal Birth Control" they will spay a momma cat for $45 dollars (I'm not sure if it goes up when they are pregnant) and have a special litter rate for when you bring in more that 3 kittens, $25 for males, $35 for females. Of course they are a little bit of a conveyer-belt system. I'm sure a regular vet costs more, but they get more specialized care.

Julie, I just got my kitties done at Vanier College Montreal, $70 spay and $30 vaccines.
Animal 911 Hôpital VÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]tÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]rinaire in Roxboro charge around $170 for the spay so Vanier is much cheaper.
I can give you the phone no. if you'd like.

Shelters are bad in QC, did you know that SPCA Monteregie (spelling??) is the only no-kill shelter in the province?
