Lucky

Almost 2 years ago I came to Crossing the Bridge to tell you about my best little buddy Toby who died from cancer. Yesterday his brother and litter mate Lucky died after a long illness. He was such a gentle cat, so loyal and kind. He loved us with the good grace and patience that only a worldly-wise fellow like he was could.

We tested his patience when we introduced Albus to him a few months after Toby died, but he quickly became Uncle Lucky and taught Albus the ropes, silently tolerating the kitten's crazy antics and ambush tactics.

No matter what we did he loved us completely.

When he went deaf he would sometimes look startled but always delighted when he realized we were in the room, and he was always so, so pleased to get a cuddle or a scratch under the chin.

He was such a kind cat - he always knew when something was wrong. For years he and I had a game where he "raced" me up the stairs. After I had surgery on my ankle he never ever raced me again, just came up the stairs step by step at my pace. Eventually arthritis slowed him down and I would go step by step up with him, and then towards the end my husband would carry him up with us, Lucky looking at him with his kind and generous eyes saying 'thank you'.

I wish there had been more I could have done for him. In the end he died with the vet, not with us and I feel that we failed him. We knew he was sick. I did think he would die, but I let the vet keep trying to make him well and agreed to leave him with the vet when now, I wish I had had courage and put him to sleep so that we could have been with him at the end.

He was 19 years old - a good age I know. And I think he had a good life. We loved him so much and I know he loved us. My life will be emptier now without his goodness and kindness. I hope he's with Toby now, running around like the strong athletic boy he used to be.

Thank you for listening

oh sweet Lucky, what a wonderful 19 years of life you had, with a family that adored you - and by the sounds of it - with a family that you adored

Play happily at the bridge sweet one, play with your brother Toby and together you can both wait until you meet your loved ones again.

play through the fields sweet one and rest peacefully - you will be deeply missed

What a loving, devoted cat Lucky sounds, and it goes without saying how much he was loved in return

RIP Lucky
but go and find your brother Toby who is waiting to play with you once again

Condolences on the loss of Lucky. He sounds like he was a wonderful companion!

Remember, it isn't the last 5 minutes of our lives that determine the quality, it is the years and years of love that came before. I'm sure in his final moments, he knew how much he was loved and cared for. I cannot blame you for hoping your dear cat could recover one more time, and giving him that chance at the vet.

This is so true. I had a kitty that I dearly loved and the same thing happened to me. I know how you feel about it, but you were also doing what you felt was right. Providing him with the proper care. Lucky certainly sounded like a wonderful boy and his name fit him well to have you as his Meowmy. Take comfort in knowing that Lucky joints do not hurt any longer and he is romping around with his brother, Toby

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and support. Lucky was such a special friend, but looking back now on all our photos of him I can see how thin and frail he had become. He was such a robust athletic cat. I hope he's at rainbow bridge now - strong and full of energy meeting up with Toby to chase around in the sunshine.

Thank you again,
