2 winters ago we had a very bad ice storm here in NC. At the time we had an indoor siamese kitten, only a couple months old. She managed to get out the door while a family member was coming in. We noticed wihin a few minutes that she was missing. I went outside, there was 6 inches of snow on the ground already, and still falling. I heard a meow, I then saw her in the top of a thin tree. I tried to coax her down with food and everything I could think of, but she wasnt coming down. I went inside, told my mom who then called the fire department. We said we have a small kitten stuck in a tree, and asked for assitance. They came over. When they got there, they claimed they didnt know it was a cat problem, and that they dont rescue cats! they stood there looking at her for 10 mins, doing nothing! They left after that. It took almost 2 hours to get her down. I couldnt believe the fire department wouldnt help us!

I love to watch animal planet shows on TV, and I don't know how many times I saw firefighters rescuing cats and dogs from various places.

They probably didnt want to get their truck dirty....I know that where I'm from, it's a requirement that everytime a truck is used in any way, they have to wash it...to me, I would think that's just part of their job!

Tonight, my naughty Sahara escaped out the door again, almost taking my husbands foot off in the process because she slammed into him so hard running out the door. She went right up to the top of a very large tree in the front yard. I could tell she was scared to death up there because she was howling. After sitting under the tree for about an hour trying to coax her down, I got an idea
to get my trusty laser light and try that. We slowly went down one branch at a time. The light seemed to make her forget her fear just long enough to follow the light to the next branch, and then she'd realize where she was and freeze again until she saw the light again. It took quite awhile, but she's finally back in the house again...until the next time she decides to make a run for it!

Well, I can fully understand why they wouldn't come out to get the kitten if that was their policy. However, they did come out and they were already there, so I see no reason why they didn't help this poor kitten. I dispatch for both police and fire for 2 different cities. Yes, our fire dept WILL come out to get a cat/kitten out of a tree. Most dept heads don't realize how a simple thing like this, does so much GOOD for the fire or police department. It shows the tax paying citizens, that their money is being put to good use and that the men and woman who work for the police/fire deprtments do care and are there to help, no matter what
