I know money is tight for many of us, but I sent Noah's Wish a
donation, as they're sending a team to Louisiana as soon as humanly
possible to set up animal rescue.

http://www.noahswish.org/

"Noah's Wish is on full mobilization for Hurricane Katrina. We will
have a 7 member initial assessment team in the Region Tuesday,
followed by over 80 of our trained Volunteers on Wednesday and
Thursday. More Volunteers will be dispatched as needs become known.
Given how widespread and devastating this hurricane is projected to
be, we are prepared to set up in multiple locations."

"Noah's Wish has a 10 member team working right now on processing
information that we are receiving, including requests for help from
animal organizations and individuals in Louisiana. The team will be
monitoring this developing storm over the next 48 hours."

"Noah's Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a
straightforward mission. We exist to keep animals alive during
disasters. That's it."

Here's another organization that helps animals in disasters: http://www.uan.org/ears/
It's United Animal Nation's E.A.R.S. (Emergency Animal Rescue Service), and they have been responding to disasters since the 1980's. This site also gives excellent advice on animal disaster preparedness, animal rescue, opportunities to volunteer, etc. If you get a chance, get a copy of Terri Crisp's (one of EARS founders) story, "Out of Harm's Way", which is about her grassroots efforts in starting an animal rescue movement. Be prepared, though, some of the results of being in a wildfire, flood or other disaster, can be very grim... The book's appendices make it an excellent reference guide on how to keep our pets safe in the event of emergency. I'm going to send out both sites to my animal loving friends. Who knows? Maybe some of us here at TCS will be able to train as rescue volunteers!

I donated last year for Cupid's birthday, around the time the last hurricane hit. Noah's Wish is excellent! I kept thinking my #1 priority in that situation would be to make sure Cupid's safe, and if he somehow managed to get out and lost...
