I need to find a home for my great Tiger tabby cat Jeffrey. He is approximately 4 years old - I rescued him 3 years ago - so 4 years is a best guess. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't have to, in fact, it is breaking my heart, but I am leaving the country on Sept 24th and have to find somewhere for him to live out his years in comfort.

I will be totally honest about Jeffrey - to me, he is the sweetest, nicest, friendliest low maintenance companion I could wish for - but to others he can be shy, and is easily threatened. This can produce some pretty anti-social behaviour - hissing mainly. So - anyone who is willing to take him on is going to have to appreciate that he is possibly going to take a while to warm to you. He'll be a bit of a work-in-progress.

That said - he is a fantastic cat - he is active, has visited the vet once in 3 years, has a great personality and is just about as curious as a cat can be. I have promised him that I will try my very, very best not to put him back in a shelter - as if I do, his behaviour, when threatened is not going to do him any favours. So I hope against all hope that somebody (who has some cat experience) reads this and will be able to help us out..

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.
I am in Brooklyn New York if anyone around here can help me out....

Wendy....I do hope you are reaching out to family members, neighbors and friends to see if they would be willing to adopt your cat. There is also a really good PDF called "how to find homes for homeless pets"..you can find it here:

http://www.natewood.net/Rehome.html

I would suggest you do all you can (including talking to vets in your area to see if you can bring him in to show as well as asking rescues if they will crosspost him while you act as his foster) to avoid turning him into a shelter. As much as shelters do what they can to find homes for all their cats..this is the middle of kitten season and if he doesn't act friendly at the shelter, if it is a kill shelter...his chances may not be great.

Another thing...although I am not a fan...some people have had success placing their animals through Craigslist:
