Stay safe everyone! I didn't realize how big it had gotten either. I'm sending up prayers for everyone down there. And any of you TCSers in the way, please do what the emergency officals suggest at least!

I do have a friend in western LA. Her mother has several health conditions so I am concerned for them even though they are out of the projected path. Unfortunately I haven't been able to contact her.

On a lighter note, one of my student's is named Katrina and she is about the sweetest person I know. She said she's heard her name so much on TV shes getting annoyed and paranoid!

It looks like it's going to hit New Orleans head on.
They are saying the city will be whiped out!
Be careful if you're down there.

Often these things will lose strength just before landfall, at this point that's about all we can hope for. The gulf waters are waaaaaay warmer than normal, and I believe a poster on a weather forum I've been monitoring said that this thing has yet to hit the warmest water (!). The people on the west side of the projected path of the eye will have it a bit easier, although hurricane force winds are extending out I think over a hundred miles this thing is so huge.

I'm very much afraid New Orleans is going to be devestated
...

Here in Alabama we'll be on the east side, the "bad" side of the storm. I know there are others, right now my concern would be for Cindy (KittenKrazy) in Jasper as she's over in west Alabama. Here in the Greater Birmingham area they're predicting gusts to 50mph and 3-6 inches of rain. If that holds true we'll be okay, but everything of course is subject to change.

Cindy...please keep us posted about how you are doing. Be safe with your beautiful big boys & doggie.

So we have 2 Cindy's that might be in danger from this storm?

I would be scared to death.

I've been watching the news all day concerning the hurricane...very scary for those in it's path. One of my sisters lives in Alabama, she's in Fort Payne that's up at the top of Alabama so hopefully she won't have it that bad.

Sending lots of stay safe vibes to everyone in the hurricane's path.

Cindy, don't you live in a mobile home? The 33/40 blog (James Spann, I think) is recommending:
"We recommend now that people abandon mobile homes for more significant shelter along and west of U.S. 43 by 3:00 p.m. Monday. Trees falling on mobile homes is one of the greatest threats to life in a situation like this."
Does that affect you?

And yes, there are two Cindys that are having to deal with this
.

They said Perdido Key (the Alabama/Florida state line basically runs right down the middle of it) is expected to get the worst storm surge they've ever had....

THE WORST? Ivan's was HORRIBLE! It soaked the fourth floor of my sister's beach house, ate the ground floor completely along with half of the main floor and 3rd floor! All the furniture in the 3rd floor disappeared!!

Although I hardly call it good, if that's true the fight with the insurance to get it fixed will be over... there won't be anything left for them to bicker over the "50%" rule (if 50% of the structure remains, they repair instead of demolish & start from scratch).

Of course that means that everyone who was devastated by Ivan and has already rebuilt will have to start all over once again... less than one year later.

God I hope everyone gets out. People can be so stubborn and insist on riding it out.

My father-in-law retired from FEMA, and had to go to NO when it flooded once. He said the whole city was full of aligators and snakes. YIKES! Can you imagine having to deal with that on top of massive flood damage????

Well, take care and don't hesitate to abandon ship if it looks like becoming a bad one your way!

Gusts are going over 200 now. I was reading the forecast discussion. They said it is unusual for a storm to hold this strong for a very long time. But they are forecasting it is still going to hit land as a 4 or 5.

Right now they're saying tropical storm force winds extend out 230 miles. If if moves toward Mobile at that size, that means we'll be getting the outer edge of that. Hopefully we'll be far enough out from it that we won't catch the related tornados.

I expect tomorrow to be rainy and blustery, but it'll be business as usual. But that's absolutely amazing that we could potentially get that effect from a storm going ashore 225 miles away.

I just noticed I hit 599 posts just then. So for my 600th post I'll tell everyone that we have been getting the very tip of the tail on some of those early feeder bands. Sudden heavy rain that lasts for about 15 minutes and goes away.

I was in the middle of washing the car and had to wait for it to pass. I know it'll rain all day tomorrow but I figured a clean wet car is better than a dirty one! At least I managed to get a new coat of RainX on there in preparation.
