My husband called to tell me that they had ordered martial law...? I guess she has no choice now. Silly woman. (besides, there's like, bodies, and snakes, and gasoline floating in the water - yuk.)

She must be under a lot of stress (like everyone in her situation) and not thinking clearly.

Thank you for using compassion in your response, Rockcat!
My first impulse was to respond," Lady, you go in & rescue at least 2 others out of the water first, & if you live to tell the tale, you're free to go home if you like. And by the way, sign this release of liability first...." I think everyone here feels frustrated and helpless, knowing that so many cats, dogs & fellow citizens needs rescue, comfort, shelter, care, etc. from this situation, and there is so little that we can do, except donate & pray/send vibes.

Checking in. We just got power back about 20 minutes ago, I've been going around re-setting clocks, re-priming aquarium filters, re-setting the DSL router, etc., etc. We had a couple of rather large branches ripped off one of the pecan trees, the yard is littered with sticks and leaves. A huge branch that had broken in the ash tree when Ivan came through last fall got blown out of the tree finally. Rather neatly missing everything. The creek once again didn't break the banks, and our local mets have said that we didn't get as much rain as expected. My little glass gauge just measured 2". With Ivan we got over 10". But we had a LOT more wind with this one, and a lot stronger wind. I'll be spending the next week picking up sticks in the yard and cleaning off the deck.

I understand some places on the coast may be without power for 2 months. Whoof. I think Camille just got bumped off her pedestal.

Oh, and it was a nice cigar, thanks

I agree, stress is very high right now. Home is important to us all! Hopefully someone has informed her of the risks involved, but she came across as someone who only care about herself. She may not have a home to come home to.

Cindy/RoseHawke - Glad you came through with minimal fuss. Resetting all those clocks is a pain, huh?

Yeah, just glad that re-setting clocks and picking up sticks is the worst of it. Especially after folks down on the coast have lost life and property with literally nothing left. The mets are just in a d*mned if you do d*mned if you don't situation. The last couple that came through they had all these warnings, and then the 'canes didn't pan out to be that bad. This one, our local met flat out stated a week ago that it "would not impact Alabama." Knowing that you can't really forecast these things a week in advance. If it had curved back into Florida as was initially expected, although bad for Florida, it would not have been nearly as strong, and quite frankly, most of Florida is built with hurricanes in mind. Although just about nothing can withstand a category 5 hurricane which this thing almost was. So there were people who had the "Cry Wolf" syndrome and didn't pay attention when they should've. Me, I know good and well that the one time I don't pay attention is going to be the one that does us in. It's the way my luck runs
.

Although we literally cannot afford it this month, we've got so many big bills that came due all at the same time (and I'm still paying for the 2 root canals and crowns I've had in the last couple of months,) I'm going to scrape up what I can to give a donation to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. At least it'll be something.

Cindy...I am so glad that you are OK with minimal damage to your property.
I cannot imagine how the people who lost everything feel.

My prayers go out to all the animals & people who have been hurt by this storm.

Bravo to you for thinking of others in need.

Yes, unless you live through something like this, you just don't know how it feels. Here is another example. Back in the late 80's, an area of Ohio just south of where I live, was hit by an F5 tornado with winds over 300mph!! After the storm was over, a reporter saw a woman out in her yard busily raking up leaves and branches out of her yard. The strange thing was, she had NO house left, it was gone. A building where a bingo game was taking place, was also destroyed along with most of the town. One person in the building was heard asking, are these bingo cards still valid? So stress can make you do some strange things. Who knows, maybe this woman had to leave her pets behind. I would be frantic too and would try to get back to my home no matter what they told me. However, I would not have left without my cats.

My brother left this morning headed back to Gulfport MS. There was no stopping him. Took him 6hours but he just called to let us know he made it.
He said they were told it could take 2months for the power to come back on. His house made it through but one street over they lost 3 houses. I'm glad he left my niece who is only 6yrs old and their 2 dogs with us.
Donny is a medic with the AirForce and he just felt helpless by staying here in Florida when he could be there helping. He did ask that we put together as much water and non-perishable foods as we can. I think I'm going to add cat food and dog food to the list. He said the National Guard hasn't yet set up trucks to hand out water and MRE's yet.
You could tell he was still in shock about what he is seeing. Its one thing to see pictures, its another to see it in person.

This is so true. With that tornado I mentioned, I drove down to the location the following day and was able to find a way into the damaged areas. You see it on TV, but to be actually standing there and see what used to be a residential street, there was nothing left, I was just shocked. This tornado was over a mile wide.

My first post got eaten!

Anyway, thanks for checking in Cindy, I am glad that you are all safe & well

I have been watching Sky News throughout the day and I can't believe that towns have turned into giant swimming pools
There is so much destruction on a large scale it's really hard to comprehend. Well done to the rescue teams in all their efforts.

I have also seen ppl looting property and also taking trolley loads of food out of supermarkets. I can understand the mass panic that ppl are driven too, but it could get scary.

Can anyone explain Martial Law to me? I have read about it above and heard it on news reports but I don't really understand what it is
Is it like citizen arrest or something?

Anyway, please take care everyone. Mother Nature is sure angry atm

Basically it's that the authorities have, well, ultimate authority. Due process is thrown out the window. There are curfews in effect, and if you ignore an order from an official to clear the street or whatever they can use deadly force if they must with no repercussions.

It was interesting, this woman on the radio had a thought that one reason they kept REALLY STRONGLY stressing how bad this one was (the NO mayor looked literally like he saw a ghost when he talked to the public right before) is that we are so inundated with news and weather 24/7 now that people due sort of tune it out, I wonder if that is part of the reason that so many didn't leave, they hear many times that hurricanes are coming and it seems many don't pack the punch they say...?

Ok, thanks for clearing that up..... I think in these circumstances they have to enforce it...

Here's a definition from Webster's also:

"Martial Law n : the body of law imposed by the military over civilian affairs (usually in time of war or civil crisis); overrides civil law"

They've called out the Guard, two battalions from Alabama I know of, and there will be others as well.

Well, the actual storm is gone, it was out of the coast by yesterday afternoon. But some of the levees around New Orleans have failed and are letting in the water of Lake Ponchartrain from what I understand. I'm not sure if the water is still rising or not, I don't think so but I'm not sure. And once the water gets in, there's no way for it to get out! The levees were designed to keep the Mississippi out, not storm surge from a hurricane.

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
Governor Blanco is giving a press conference... Their faces are... of anguish, sadness and grief. There are affairs: The conditions at the Superdome are deteriorating, and the Charity Hospital is out of commission and they are trying to evacuate the patients. Toulaine University Hospital is also surrounded by 6 feet of water. Apparently in the downtown area the water is slowly creeping up, due to the levee breach in Lake Ponchatrain. The eastbound area of I-10 is extremely damaged. Both airports are underwater, and only one highway into New Orleans is in order, and its being used in order to bring aid. The U.S. Coast Guard is doing rescue operations for people in rooftops among others.

The Louisiana National Guard says that the Army Core of Engineers are preparing a plan to stop the levee breach, which may consist of basically sandbagging it, and then break another levee elsewhere so that by force of gravity the water gets out the river or through the Lake.

There are like 70 deaths in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, and 80% of Mississippi is without power.

I am pretty much storm wise... I have lived big hurricanes before, like Georges in 1998... I thought I honestly had seen it everything... but this baffles my own imagination... I haven't seen statistics of this size since Hurricane San Felipe II hitting Puerto Rico in 1928. I can't even compare it, its just extraordinary.
