I admit I went on a graveyard tour there. You can't go there alone as the projects are near the graveyards and you have a very high chance of being robbed, etc, so I didnt want to take the chance. It is highly possible that those bodies are from the mausoleums.

Does anyone know how far west in Louisiana the problems are? My friend lives near Jennings and I'm concerned. She changed her cell number recently and I can't find it.

Jennings!! Really?!?

I am from Lake Charles. Very, very close to Jennings. About 20 minutes. Or less.
I talked to my family in Lake Charles and they said all they got was some rain and a little wind. Nothing at all major.
Hope this info comforts you.

How horrible!! The poor crew will probably have nightmares for life - can you imagine the frustration?! If only they could have turned off the power, or at least found a deputy to put the poor thing out of its misery...oh, life can be so CRUEL!
And my heart goes out to all those poor people & animals spending tonight in the dark, waiting for rescue...

Well, I just looked at the radar on NOAA. Looks like Birmingham is pretty good. Shows that storm total rain is an inch or two?

Jasper looks like they got it a bit more...3 or 4 inches?

Looks like its headed to Evansville - good luck everyone, I'm thinkin of ya!

I'm in that Evansville area! The local weatherman said it should be tracking more southeast toward Louisville and Cincinnati. Windy and rain - lots of both. I sure am glad we have no plans to go anywhere tomorrow.

Yeah, I knew you were in Evansville - and Carolcat grew up there???

Sounds scary - hopefully it's losing some of its steam! I can't find the stupid "crossing fingers" icon, so here's a hug!

The only problems we should at our house is water in the basement - that should keep the sump pump working all day.

If we lose power, then mom and I would probably have to do the right thing and eat all of the ice cream...
Can't have it melting and going to waste!

Oh, rumors have locals heading and filling up their gas tanks. "Did you hear they will raise gas to maybe $5 a gallon?
" When asked for why they were filling up, one person said "my friend called me and said that..." One station is out of gas because of it. i've got about 7 gallons in the van and that will have to hold me until September 1st.

Mutter, mutter....hub just called and woke me up.....seems the power is off at the bakery! We're far enough out in the sticks that it probably won't be back on there until morning or later. He'll be bringing our chicken and milk thats in the coolers there down here to the shoe store.....there is one benifit to being on the same line with the Alabama Power hub here in town.....we usually get ours back on pretty soon when we lose power!

The reporter was really shaken up about the whole thing.

Here are some exerpts from a Yahoo! news article. How sad about the blind man; I suppose the outlook isn't good. It is so heartwrenching to find out that somehow our country left the disabled, elderly & other "weakest of the society" to fend for themselves in this disaster....

......"We've pulled literally hundreds of people out of the waters," Blanco said some 12 hours after Hurricane Katrina slammed into this southern US city of 1.4 million people. "We believe there are hundreds more out there. And so tonight is critical."

....Darryl Thibodeaux, 49, couldn't get off the freeway to find his brother.

"He's blind and his roof collapsed but I can't get to him. I can't drive through this and I can't swim," he said as he stared down into waist-high water that was filled with floating debris and covered in oil slicks.

"I'm afraid to go in that water because I know they have snakes and alligators in that water," Thibodeaux said.

I have the news on here and the reporter was just breaking down as she described the animals and people that rescue workers that rescue crews couldn't get to due to the power lines and gas lines that were still active.
She described how people were yelling and dogs were yelping for help and how despairing it is not to be able to get to them.

My guess is that most of them didn't really want to, but they...
1) couldn't take their pets (not enough room in the car)
2) wouldn't stay in a shelter that didn't accept pets
3) couldn't afford to
4) didn't have transportation
5) didn't believe it would hit them until it was too late to leave
6) had a spouse who wouldn't leave and didn't want to be separated

It was a struggle last year for us here on the east coast of central Florida. We have one very small car. I called tons of motels and the closest one that accepts pets was in Alabama. (I know that many hotels break the rules in these circumstances, but its still taking a chance). With gas being in short supply there was a chance that we would run out and be stuck in the car. Better to be stuck in a house than in a car. We stayed downstairs from our apartment (built out of block). The whole time we wondered if we made the right decision. I pray that we don't have to go through this again.

My heart really goes out to these hurricane victims. My prayers are with them.

Sooz, so glad you're ok!!!

Take care Cindy, and I hope you enjoy the cigar!

Good grief! This morning they interviewed a woman who was insisting they let her back in the area so she could check her property. "They made us leave and now they won't let us back in. If they don't let us in, I'm not paying taxes!

Anyone else have the urge to smack her?
