Its very sad and tragic. I've been watching it on the tv, (with the 24 hr coverage) We were in memphis, Tn this weekend at my boyfriends house and we got some bad storms and power outage from the hurricane. I'm back in arkansas now and i can that we're getting effected too. I just pray for those people in the path.

I am praying hard for everyone in Katrina's path and that rescue and relief efforts will be able to start immediately afterwards.

I saw a woman on the NBC news last night who, though she has a small house, is going to wait it out ON A SHRIMP BOAT with her 3-year-old daughter!
Come on lady, NOTHING could be more dangerous than waiting out a hurrican on a boat. I hope and pray that her little girl makes it through this safely.

Yes, the superdome was designated a shelter of last resort. They say there's about 10,000 people there who couldn't leave the city - no cars or money or whatever.

I saw that too, also there was another woman who chose to stay that was interviewed by phone (she was in a house but still) She said they always say it's going to be so badand it never is....GoshI hope these people are ok. I know some simply can't afford to leave.

Here in SW Indiana we have a forecast for 1-3 inches of rain and possibly winds gusting up to 40mph! Katrina is a big storm and will affect most of the eastern USA in some way.

I have been watching the weather channel. One reporter is in an area that is 27 feet above sea level. He thought it was safe at that height. But, his last report was that cars were totally covered with water and floating in the parking lot and water was coming into the bulding. That again, is at an area 27 feet above sea level. New Orleans is below sea level. As for the woman who is riding the storm out with her 3 year old daughter. I myself, would not leave. I would love to ride a hurricane out, being the storm chaser that I am
. However, I would NEVER do this if I had children. I would not put their lives in danger like this. Some people just don't think

Ugh....you're going to laugh, but one of the ways that hurricanes coming through affects me is that the changing pressure usually gives me a migraine......but not until its a couple of hundred miles away........Katrina is still a good peice away from here, and I can already feel it building......nothing life threatning, I know, but a huge PITA!

My dad is retired now, but when he captained a shrimp boat, that was the norm! He worked out of Port Canaveral. (Of course, a 3 year old should not be in this situation!!!) After the Disney Boat began to dock at the port, all fishing boats were not allowed to stay during hurricanes because of damages they could cause. My dad would either go into the river or the ocean and try to get far enough away so that he was unaffected. This was very scary for me.

One year his cat, Scootch, who lived on his boat with him was being spayed and stayed on land in a brick building. I was happy about that, but still worried about my dad. Somehow he always came through it.

BTW, Scootch is now 6 years old and lives with my dad and his girlfriend.

Just thought I would check in this morning. We are doing very well in the panhandle of Florida compared to Mississippi and Louisiana. We have had wind gust up to 50 mph out here in Destin and the water has covered 98. The worst for us in water coming up. Its up into my in-laws basement. Just so much water. I hate that Katrina went over to Mississippi and Louisiana but after Ivan and Dennis I'm so glad it didn't come here! My brother is taking shelter with us, he is stationed at Kissler AFB. The stories he is hearing are bad. Everyone please try to stay safe.

Prayers are with everyone there. I cant bear to turn on the news right now. I went out and gave blood this morning. Also donated what I had in the house for unperishables and the like.

Last call from my friend this morning he has taken in over 500 animals on his place.

Oh, I'm sorry about your migraine. When I was in Frances last year my hips hurt SOOOOOO bad from an operation I'd had on them.

I just wanted to pop in to say that I'm OK! I'm in Lafayette - about 1 1/2 hours WEST of New Orleans. We're getting some pretty strong winds and lots of rain at the moment and we have not had any damage to our home as of yet.

I feel for the residents of New Orleans, the city has been destroyed. The local news has reported that there is at least 150 people on roof tops waiting to be rescued. Also a housing building has collapsed. The horrible thing is that the rescue workers can not get through to help these people.

Just send prayers and keep the hurricane victims in your thoughts.

Thanks for all of the good vibes and prayers - they are much needed!

Reading this thread has made me so sick to my stomach. I hate to think how badly New Orleans has taken this battering - the city and its people have a special place in my heart. I sure hope that its over fast and there is a way to clean up the city.

Wow, I just heard more news from The Weather Channel. From where this reporter was staying, a huge water tower, I believe he said 5000 gallons, just blew over!! This has not been confirmed yet, but they think there may have been a 35 foot storm surge, this would be an all time record if it is true. Of course, what this means is, any homes or businesses that are along the coast at sea level, would be under 30+ feet of water.
