My dad recently bought a farm, and it needs some serious work. My BF and I have been working our butts off trying to get it ready for my horse and my step-mom's horse. They are going to LOVE it...the stalls will be HUGE (11'x12') and they will have a paddock out in back of the barn, plus acres of pasture.

Here is the interior of the barn:
This is from the the front looking in at what will be the stalls:

This is from inside the stall area:

My BF and I ripped out all of the existing feed bins and trough today, witha little help from my little sister. It took about 2 hours of hard work with a crow bar, sledge hammer and pitch fork (for the nasty old hay), but we got it done. Ripping out 36 feet worth of old wood held together with nails that have rusted into the wood is freakin' hard work!! We are going to build 2 walls to seperate the 2 stalls and the tack room, we need to put up heavy-duty wood paneling on the walls, make doors and windows for the stalls, grade the floor.... Am I lever ooking at a busy fall!! Hopefully we will have it ready with the basics within a few weeks, and the details can come later.

This is the paddock. My dad is going to buy some horse-friendly PVC fencing for this area. We need to burn the moldy hay and wood that's in the pile, and drag the whole thing with a heavy-duty magnet to pick up any nails or other metal debris.

Ohh...I didn't know that about PVC!! The mare-mares are very respectful of fences, but you never know when one will get spooked and take off into one. I will see if I can talk my dad into buying something less likely to splinter.
The barn is pretty sound, structurally...it's been standing for over 100 years. It DOES need a lot of touch up work, you're right! The roof needs patched up, the loft needs reinforced, the back doors need fixed...it's a mess. But it's going to be a really nice horse home when it's done.
I will post before-and-after pics when we get it finished.

You should drag your barn with that magnet as well. I can well imagine all the nails and stuff that has been buried over the years

The barn floor is getting dug up and resurfaced...it's pretty rough. Any nails in there will be taken out with the dirt.

It will be hard work, but yes it will be well worth it in the end. It'll save me well over $200/month in board, and my horse will have daily turn-out and lots of room to run.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! We started with a pig barn, 2 feet deep with old dehydrated stuff, no stalls, and no fencing. It does have a cement floor, though, so that makes a nice surface. Just had to shovel it clean, put in stalls, and add rubber mats!

Best of luck to you. Hope you can get the horses moved in on schedule!
