Howdy, good people. I reintroduced myself earlier today on "New Cats on the Block," and now I would like to reintroduce Samwise. He is as cute as ever. Two charming TCS ladies showed me how to use Photobucket today, so I should be able to crank in a couple of photos here, with a little bit of luck.

It was not easy to get Samwise to sit still, and sit up, for this photo, but in the end it shows how regal a big male Turkish Van can be.

Can't stop with just one, so here is another -- Samwise is showing off this time.

As you might guess, ol' Sam has pretty well taken over the Brown house on the beach, and being a classic member of the clan of the "Swimming Cats," he feels quite at home.

His comeuppance is coming, though. In a couple of weeks his step-sister, Galadriel, here, will be joining us as soon as she finishes the show circuit, which, cross our fingers, should be in just two weeks.

Those old timers here who remember my many tales about Samwise will recall that he got his name since his dad was named The Lord of the Rings, and each of his dad's other kittens, including Galadriel, were also named after characters in Tolkien's book and magnificent movie series. They have siblings and step-siblings named, for example, Boromir, Legolas, Arwen and Eowyn.

Samwise is so often into mischief that we sometimes call him Gollum. As a matter of fact, in this snapshot of Sam he has one of his favorite toys, a Lance Armstrong bracelet. You who have seen the movies I think would agree that the caption, "Samwise falls under the spell of the One True Ring." is just perfect.

Here is Galadriel again. She is lovely, but Ann and I do have a slight difference of opinion when we compare her beauty with another who played the role, Cate Blanchett.

Goodnight to all from a beach down in Texas. Ann and I will be looking forward to hearing from you on TCS.

Good cheer,

Jim

OK, now that I appear to have figured out photographs, just one more of Samwise before he and I go to bed, to await Ann's return tomorrow.

Poor old Samwise has had a tough life. Before he came to join Ann and me his breeder had him on the show circuit as a whole cat. He quickly became a CFA Grand Champion (I love to brag on him), and then, as is the norm for show cats who become house cats, he was neutered before coming to the beach. His breeder congratulated him for being such a good Van, and assured him that he was through with cat shows.

After Samwise took over our home we learned about CFA competition for neutered cats, Ann and I broke the breeder's promise, and poor ol' Sam had to embark on a whole new round of cat shows with Ann and me, in what the CFA calls the Premiership Class, competing to become a Grand Premier. Samwise was not all that happy about this, since his prize for becoming a Grand Champion was to be neutered. He suspected that the prize for becoming a Grand Premier must be the death penalty. So ol' Sam was not the most cooperative cat in his second round of shows.

This photo was taken at his last show, where he earned the title of Grand Premier to go with his title of Grand Champion.

It rather dramatically demonstrates his attitude toward cat shows at the time, and he told us in no uncertain terms that he intended to go to no more cat shows. And he hasn't. He has been happily retired on the beach, his snooty full name now beling "GC, GP, Caravanserai Samwise." And occasionally, "Gollum."

Cheers,

Jim

I read the link that you gave to the breeder, what interesting cats! I love their large tails. Very pretty... I would love to have one. Does yours like to swim?

Good morning, all.

We don't really know, since Samwise has never really had an opportunity. We do not have a swimming pool, much less an indoor pool. Samwise being an indoor cat, and cats being cats, we don't dare give him a chance to swim outdoors. He would be off like a shot, and we have wildlife like bobcats and coyotes in the wild here on the beach where we live. Sam is so confident that he is king of the world that we have no doubt but that he would take them on, regardless of their size and ferocity, and he only has one of his nine lives left now.

In the wild near Lake Van in Turkey, where the breed originated, Vans would swim in lakes and streams and catch fish as part of their natural diet. Their coats are unique, designed by Mother Nature to keep them afloat.

Samwise, like others of his breed, is fascinated by water. Turn on the water in the kitchen or a bath and he will be right there, sticking his nose in the water. Every morning he naps in the bathtub after breakfast, as he is doing at this very moment. At any time he is likely to be found snoozing in a bathroom sink.

The only time he does not care for water is when it is bath time, which is another story in and of itself.

The Turkish Van is indeed a remarkable breed. They are relatively new to the 'States and are not all that well known. If you would like to learn more about the breed you might take a look here, the CFA Breed Profile. The lovely female pictured at the top of this site was a housemate of Samwise and Galadriel at their breeder's cattery in San Antonio. Bal, Turkish for "Honey," was judged the Best of Breed, nationwide, following the 2004-2005 show season. Samwise was way up there himself, but he could not match Honey's winning record. A beautiful little girl, and she now has had equally charming kittens.

This article about the Turkish Van will round out the story of the breed, and will give you an idea of why we are so fascinated by the Turkish Van. At one moment they are snuggling in your lap, and at the next they are roaring up and down and around the walls. Just cats, of course, but different than any other.

Here you can see the results of one of Samwise's rips around the house. Ann didn't think this was all that funny. Go figure.

Have a fine day and super weekend. It looks like you, like us, have dodged the Katrina bullet up there in Arkansas. We do hope so, but you can never predict what these hurricanes might do at the last moment.

All the best,

Jim

At the kitty's beck and call
Great photos Jim - Samwise is certainly a character and a very handsome boy. I guess that now he's asserted his Grand Champion status he feels he doesn't have to put up with cat shows anymore

Lily often goes by the name of Gollum too!

Thanks for the history about Turkish Vans. SamWise is gorgeous.
It looks like "Hurricane SamWise" struck your home already.

I will look forward to more pictures of SamWise. Is Galadrial your kitty too?
Please keep the photos coming.

Howdy, Lei,

Yes, Galadriel, aka "Holly," is our kitty now, but we will not take delivery from the breeder until she retires from the cat show circuit after becoming a Grand Champion herself and she has been spayed. We have our fingers crossed that she will attain the 200 show points required for becoming a Grand Champion at the Houston show in two weeks. Wish her luck. She is really not the great show cat that Samwise was, but, on the other hand, she is so sweet and more of a lap cat, which Samwise is really not. I suspect that the difference in the character of males and females crosses many species lines.

Cheers,

Jim
