I know, this has been posted so many times but I'm a foster mom - just got Kiera last night so I have no prior behavior to compare to.

Kiera is approx 8 months old, abandonded during "moving season" (July 1st) and according to the vet at the SPCA (shelter that we are fostering for) she is "probably pregnant". We are to keep her until the kittens are old enough to be rehomed or until we determine that Kiera is not pregnant.

She's a real sweetie, very affectionate, loves having her tummy rubbed gently. Her nipples seem larger than on my other cat (but she's 9 yrs old and spayed so I'm not sure she's a good comparison tool) and they're still surrounded by fur, her belly does seem firm and a bit large. You can feel tiny "gas bubbles" if you put your hand on her tummy but that might just be "actual gas bubbles" ! (reminds me of when I was pregnant and wanting to feel the baby move - you'd mistake every disgestive gurgle for the baby!).

In case the above pictures didn't post, I've added them to my yahoo photo album. Click on the album titled "Is Kiera pregnant"

Have a great day

It is really hard to tell from the photos (but she is awfully cute!) so really, your best bet is to have a vet look at her and determine what may be going on. If she is pregnant, then it would be my guess she isn't very far along yet, but again, photos aren't really clear enough for me to make an educated guess here.

When you got her from the shelter, had she been vetted? Has she been dewormed and checked for the normal feline baddies?

Welcome to TCS. If the SPCA couldn't tell if she was pregnant...then there is a good chance that we wouldn't either. I am a volunteer at a no kill rescue group and we have had false pregnancies in the past...cats that exhibited behaviors and physical characteristics of a pregnant cat (even the vet thought they were pregnant) but when their date came..and passed...they didn't have any kittens. So there are cats out there that can seem pregnant but aren't. My suggestion is to move ahead as if she were pregnant....but be prepared in case she turns out not to be.

Yes, the SPCA vet had checked her and she was dewormed before coming to us. She is listed as "gestating" on her foster parent paperwork but then the worker at the SPCA mentionned that the vet said "probably" that's why I was wondering.

Do nipples on a non-pregnant female cat stick out ? Like I said, I checked my own cat to compare and frankly couldn't even find any !

I'm not so good at "wait and see" - I'm more of a "wanna know NOW" type !

Thanks for your replies - I'll "assume" she is for a few more weeks and keep my eyes peeled for more signs.

Yes..they can....it happened to one of our notorious non-pregnant cats (we swore we could even feel kittens). I understand about wanting to know now...but you will just have to see. Good Luck.

I can't really help you with your question... never had a pregnant cat. You probably will just have to wait and see.

Nice to see someone from Montreal on the board though
I'll be living in Montreal too, starting next week.

Good luck with your new foster. She's a beauty!!

8 months old, not spayed, abandoned for a time...sure is possible that she is pregnant. I would say yes...LOL, but there is no way on earth I can say that with even the smallest amount of credibility.

I would wait a few weeks, take her to your regular vet and have them thoroughly examine her.

Good luck, she is a beauty!

That's what I thought ! How could she NOT be !

I'm assuming she is, but I guess I'll have to wait and see *sigh*. Also, I figure I'm going to weight her on my digital kitchen scale and see if she is gaining weight in leaps and bounds.

Thanks

One of my fosters this year was picked up off the streets, estimated to be 8 months old, and we originally thought she had been spayed, but 2 months later she came into season, the only reason we can think of for her not getting pregnant is she must have been a late developer. Needless to say, she was then spayed.
