On Sahara's first day here, I treated her for ear mites and all the rest of the cats. They seemed to be clean of ear mites at that time. Yesterday, I noticed Sahara scratching at one of her ears and when I checked, it had a dark crusty crust inside. The other one is just fine. I took her to the vet and he said it was ear mites and gave me medicine to put in her ears. I cleaned them out with a saline solution first, because she has an open sore in there. I'm afraid to put the ear mite medicine when this sore is still open because I'm afraid it will hurt her even more. The vert said it will be fine, but I wanted your advice first.

It is difficult for anyone on this site to gauge whether it would be okay or not to put the ear mite medicine in her ears.

There are treatments that do not require you to place them in the ear but rather on the back of the head similar to that of topical flea treatments. These should be available at your vet's surgery. Perhaps you could discuss using these instead with your vet.

And do keep in mind, you can seek a second professional opinion if you feel unsatisfied.

Yes I was thinking about getting a second opinion....just for the fact that only one of her ears are crusty and none of the other cats show any signs of ear mites. She didnt have them when she first got here, and it's unlikely that she would have picked them up here because all my cats have always been mite free. So, I believe it's some type of ear infection. Thanks for your advice!
