Hey everyone! My poor kitty has passed away but i want to help more kittens. Yesterday i was outside and in my neighborhood theres ALOT of stray cats around. I saw a pregnant cat walking around, i think looking for food. i left some in a bowl but i dont know if she took it or not. (other cats may have eaten the food over night) This is the 1st time ive seen her around and i noticed the buldge. From what it looks like, shes pregnant but im not 100%. if she is pregnant what can i do to help her? IS there anything i can do to help her? She is a stray cat so she doesnt let me get near her and i dont wanna hurt her in anyway, espeacially the kits.

I would get in touch with a feral cat organization. Here is a list in New Jersey:

http://www.alleycat.org/orgs.html#nj

They can work with you to help to trap these cats and have them spayed/neutered and then returned outdoors. If the pregnant one isn't too far along in her pregnancy (a vet can make that determination)...I would really recommend you consider having her spayed. Unless you are willing to trap her and keep her in your place until she has her kittens and weans them..it's probably the most humane thing you can do for her.

Thanx, ill see what i can do about bringing her into my house. It will be real hard though because of 2 reasons.
#1. She doesnt let me get near her.
#2. My parents will kill me if i bring in a pregnant cat.(im going to be 17 on Oct 7th)

I live in an Apt. building and the landlord doesnt like animals in the house but he might let it slide if i keep them from messing up the house.

Ill check out the website you posted and ill post back on what happens.

Thank You for your help

If you can't bring the cat indoors...perhaps you can ask if there is someone who is willing to trap and care for the cat. You could post about her here:

http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pet/

Just make sure she isn't owned. You can also contact the TNR groups I listed to see if they can help.

if i trap the cat, what should i do with it? Because maybe i can leave her in my hallway. She will be safe from the street and also will have food/water. What should i do if i catch her? what should i put her in? anything speacial to feed her?

Thanx

I don't think that would work...first of all..the trap is only big enough to allow her to be trapped...you don't want to keep her in it very long. The 2 choices you have are 1. take her to the vet to be spayed (then you don't have to worry about your landlord having issues with you having a cat) or 2. buying a large dog crate and placing her in the crate with kitten food, water, litterbox and a nesting box. I would not recommend having her in your hallway...that would probably scare her with all the foot traffic. Better to have her in a room where she can spend time alone. But that will also mean that you are now responsible to ensure she doesn't get out of the crate..and you will have to keep her until she has and weans the kittens...then you will have to have her spayed and place her kittens. That is a LOT of work.

I really want to help out. My live on the 4th floor (last floor) and there isnt much foot traffic. I wanted to help her through the whole process and then when its time to find a place for em all, i was going to keep a kit. The rest i would make sure had a good home.

I was outside yesterday and i tried getting near her again but she let me get about a foot from her and then she ran off.

Furball...please don't try to pet/catch her without a trap. I understand you mean well...but she cannot remain in trap until she gives birth...additionally, if you mean to keep her in the hallway to your building..that won't work either as what if your landlord or someone else decides to call Animal Control...then she is taken away and may be euthanized. The only way this will work is if you can 1. borrow a trap 2. transfer her from the trap to a large crate inside your apartment (you will need your parents permission) 3. provide her with food, litter, water and a nesting box. 4. you will be responsible for all her vet care as well as any care the kittens need. It is a LONG commitment...however long she has to give birth and then 12 additional weeks once the kittens are born. That is why I would highly recommend contacting the TNR groups I provided to you. The further you wait....the closer she gets to giving birth outside..which is not ideal at all.
