I DO believe that whatever it is that makes me me (my genes, my soul, nature, nurture, whatever you believe and choose to call it...) is the same thing that gives my sweet Leo and Lola their purrsonalities. And anyone who meets my cats can tell...they are different individuals. How can their construction be any different than mine?
And another question I like to ask the really ignorant Bible-thumping Christian fundamentalists: what is it about being human that makes me btter than my cat? Or any other animal. How is my life...regardless of what anyone believes happens when it's all over...of greater value than an animal's? Obviously, no one can prove or disprove the existence of anyone's soul, human or animal. It's a belief that you either choose to have faith in, or you don't. But...what makes it acceptable for me to eat, kill, wear, exploit, etc. an animal, but not another human? And, given that we here all know that our kits and dogs and, for that matter, every other animal on this earth, has a distinct mannerism and personality, just like humans do...how can you justify your argument that they don't have souls?
I just get really uppity with this whole selective heaven thing. 3 days after one of my childhood friends died of a massive asthma attack when I was 16, a Bible totin' fundamentalist who was in one of my classes came up to me and said 'How does it make you feel that because Raghu was Hindu and didn't believe The Truth, that he'll go to Hell?'
Needless to say, I was never able to speak to (or forgive) this girl for her words. It's Christians like that who makes me skeptical of the entire religion, and sadly, this kind of Christian is growing in ranks in recent years. It's so sad that people use religion as an excuse to be hateful and ignorant of not just people, but animals. Shouldn't it do the opposite on all fronts??
I have some thoughts of agreement to add to this..
We are made of the same stuff as our animals, of the earth & universe itself. Just arranged a little differently. Wasn't it said that if you took the human body & broke it down into it's basic elements, that it would be worh less than a dollar?
I don't believe in organized religion-one of the reasons being what angers you, as well. The smug, self-righteous attitude that some Christians have about "their" God being the right one, they are better because of it, etc, etc.
If one thinks about all of the world religions, most claiming that their God is the one & only God, & the non believers will burn in Hell, then doesn't that mean that we are ALL going to burn in Hell? If you think about it, it's so ridiculous, it's almost funny. What isn't funny is that religious fanatics actually kill innocent people because of their beliefs. And yes, that includes Christians. They think it's o.k to break down the belief system of a culture that has existed for centuries, if not longer, simply because of that smug belief that "Christianity is best".
Sometimes I think animals have more of a soul, a pure heart, than some people do. Animals bring warmth & unconditional love into our lives. They improve our lives in so many ways beyond that. Maybe it should turn the tables on how religion thinks of animals. Maybe they were created to look after us
. To soothe our souls. Not to be beaten & starved & exploited because we think we are lords of all things. We are not. And humankind can't really consider themselves a totally enlightened race until we realize that.
