I live on Long Island in New York and I know things tend to be expensive where I live BUT $475.00 for a neuter & spay??!!

Both Bob & Allie went in today for a basic neuter & spay. The neuter $179.00 and the spay $296.00. Maybe Bob had golden "nuggets" and Allie had little pearls for ovaries...?

I have been using a particular doctor at my vet's office for 20-years and although he is a bit more than most I've stayed loyal for all these years because he has always given 100% of himself with all my animals...Saturday nights...holidays...very active with my local Humane Society...etc.

I think it may be time for a new vet. though? What do you think...a bit on the pricey side or what?

That is about in line for what my vet here in central Virginia charges. I think the neuter was a little higher at the clinic I use though ... I seem to remember it being over $200 for the boys and a little over $300 for the girls.

And I was glad I wasn't holding Bob's carrier with him in it when they gave me the bill

Based on what you said about being happy with your Vet, making himself available on weekends and holidays (and his participation at the local Humane Society
) I would stick with him. Unless you just can't afford to continue or have moved away from the area.

Sure the prices are high, but I bet the rent and cost of doing business on Long Island is pretty high too.

My husband is from Long Island, and we just got back from a visit. EVERYTHING is expensive there, so expensive vet care doesn't really surprise me. Wow, though....I'll stay with my little vet in Illinois.

When I got my girl I called every vet visit in town and got an estimate for her spay (and umbilical hernia repair). Every vet quoted me at around $400.00!! I ended up taking her to my parents vet for around the same, but still the cheapest estimate I heard.

Buddy's neuter was $75. It could have been $50 (they have a cheap neuter Friday once a month) but I couldn't make it on that day.

Holy smokes! I pay $35.00 for neuters and $65.00 for spays (but then I get special rates) but still! YIKES! Did they find oil?

I don't have the option of utilizing any of the low- or no-cost spay/neuter clinics and so am forced to pay what the vets in my area feel is reasonable for those services. I do go to a vet that describes himself as "not the cheapest guy in town" but he is a feline theriogenologist (specializes in feline reproduction) and as a breeder located in a climate that is LARGELY pro-spay/neuter (PETA is headquartered here), I do feel safe with him. It is for this reason that I don't argue about the rates. He is worth it to me.

here it is $40 and $25 for girls and boys (respectivly) I have heard sometimes for as much as $50 but I guess here it isnt so expensive.

It really puts a perspective on things though. When I hear of people saying they are saving up to get their animals fixed I think either they are on a really tight budget or they are just using it as an excuse, but at $300 I can see why you would need to save.......

here in germany for neuter is 46 euros so about $40, and about 65 euros for spay.
If spay and neuter is so essential why make the prices so high?

Totally agree!! It's not just spay & neuter either. Buster, my 2-yr. old adult Persian had the flu back in June. $265.00 for an office visit, antibiotics and blood work-up. Misty, 14-yr. old Persian (crossed rainbow bridge) cost into the "thousands" for treatment of renal failure.

Unfortunately, when our pets get sick and/or need spay/neuter, a visit to the vet. isn't always an option because of price/financial reasons. Even though, it is the right thing that these fuzzy faces see a vet., sometimes it is very hard to do the right thing.

Wow! What kind of cars do these vets drive??? That is just sooo expensive! I appreciate rates are high in all areas, but how much overhead can that be? I guess a good base line is to consider local lawyer's rates; here, $250.00/hr. is a decent price for a lawyer, and my vet charges $55/$80 for neuter/spay. The other vet hospital charges more, about $120.00 for a spay, so roughly a little less than half of what the attorney's charge. I guess that any business will charge what people are willing and able to pay. The sad part is that so many suffering pets will not be able access services in a timely manner; a trip to the kill-shelter might be the only recourse for them.

The ironic part of this is: I have $250.00 in funds from Spay USA sitting at this particular vet's. office for TNR to be used ONLY for feral cats/kittens.

Bob & Allie "WERE" born from this feral colony that I take care of. Unfortunately, they were born premature & in March...long story...these 2 are bottle-fed babies from a feral colony that I decided to keep.

I asked the receptionist if I could apply some of those funds that I have toward Bob & Allies neuter/spay...and she said NO because I decided to keep Bob & Allie. So, in other words, I am being penalized for taking in two newborns...born from a feral mom...have taken them for their appropriate baby shots and have given them a non-feral life in a warm, safe & loving environment. Sorry...bit of a rant here. I even asked if I could pay 1/2 and the Spay USA monies pay for the other 1/2...NO was the answer. I probably should have asked the vet. directly.

Vets costs are outrageously expensive.
My vet probably charges about that much though, and that's in OH.
Other vets around charged a lot less.
If you have to spay/neuter any more cats, you should always ask first how much they are going to charge you for it, cause every vet charges differently.
