I have to travel by car this month from Alabama to Arizona. I have a dog and a cat and my cat is the one I'm really worried about. He can't even go on a short car ride (5 min.) without going to the bathroom on himself. I don't want to let him wonder around my car but I also don't want him sitting in his own waste. I've had to do a day trip with him and stopped the food and gave some relaxing pill from the vet, but that didn't work at all. Plus, this will be a three day trip. Please, is there anyone out there that has long travel experience with cats that already have bladder and bowel problems? I have so many concerns if someone would be willing to talk to me and share their concerns and/or solutions. Thanks!

I know you said you don't want your kitty free in the car, but if you decide to change your mind about that... I have a 4 hour drive between school and home, when Oliver travels with me, his carrier is secured to my passenger seat and he's secured to the leash clip in the carrier (he wears his harness and leash too)... once we get on the road, I open the top of his carrier (it's soft sided), in this situation he basically has freedom to roam on the passenger seat and passenger floor... i keep his litter box (open top, not domed) on the front floor and he readily uses it during the trip, then hops back up on his seat... my parents used the same idea but had him on the back seat in my mom's mini van the one time they brought him up for me... good luck with the trip!

What a great idea! I think that's what I'm going to do. See, I'll be driving for about 12 hours a day and he refuses to walk around outside on his leash so I was worried about him getting stiff since he has joint problems. He will move around indoors with his leash on, just not outside. Thanks you so much!

No problem!! I'm so glad it was of help to you!

Oliver's never really fond of being kept in his carrier and will usually cry the whole time if I don't let him out... yes, the in-car poopies can be kinda stinky, but keep your scoop or baggies handy and you can clean up whenever you potty-stop for you and/or the pup!

Let us know how the trip goes for you! Good luck!
