I have two cats who are sharing a litterbox right now. They don't seem to mind at all.

Problem is it gets stinky really easily (both often have soft and very stinky stools)

After I move next week, I am thinking of buying a second litterbox. Would that help?

The one I have right now is covered. I'll either get another covered one or one of those accessible from the top http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...=1124761623180
(or maybe I'll just cut a hole on the top of a plastic container)

are top-accessible boxes good for controlling odors? I'm sure that would reduce the amount of litter on my floor at least!

Are two litterboxes better than one?...depends on how many times you scoop & clean.

Religiously, I scoop out the mess every morning and I would say every 2-weeks, the entire litter box is dumped, cleaned with soap & water and refilled with new litter.

I have four litterboxes, and I rarely smell any of them, unless it's right after a really stinky poo! The more litterboxes, the happier your cats. Generally, they prefer to use one box for #1 and another for #2.
I have a top entry litterbox, and I love it (but I refuse to pay $30ea to replace my other three). I have a couple "flingers"
and the top-entry almost totally eliminates the mess. At my last house I kept it in the kitchen/laundry, and had no complaints.

I would say you should have at least 2, I clean mine ALOT during the day, and clean the completelt every week, I think it also depends on the litter you use

It sounds like you have a food problem. Diet can cause soft, stinky stools.

I agree that diet could be the problem!

I have two cats and two trays, I clean them throughout the day, so they are always free from waste - I also use litter freshener. I don't have any problems with smells from them!
