Hi everyone,
When I first got Villy I had the window open a little upstairs, and to my horror she went and stood in it as if she was going to jump out!

Would she? She goes in and out of the downstairs windows all the time when they are open, but don't cats have ANY perception of height? I know she may well land on her feet but she may also be seriously also be seriously injured, perish the thought

What can I do?
I'm especially worried as my sister, her husband, and her two young children are coming to stay, possibly for a few months, soon, what if they leave a window open and she jumps out?

I know I can ask them not to leave the windows open, but they are only human and they might forget, I'm so worried

You better get a screen ASAP. Your cat can easily jump out. If Villy sees a bird fly by, she may lunge for him. If you cannot get a screen, maybe a reminder note right ON the window would help.

I use plastic trellis. They come in decorative patterns, just be sure the holes are small enough so the cat can't get caught in them, and measure your window, cut the trellis to size and pop it in place.

Twice in my life I had a cat jumpout of an upstairs window. The first time was when my indoor cat Pippin lept for a fly and went right through the net curtains and landed two stories down on concrete. He broke his palate but made a full recovery. Then, several years later, my Sheba, who was being kept indoors until her spay appointment, managed to get out a tiny slit in the top of a bedroom sash window. I found her two days later in a neighbour's garden with a broken leg. (And we discovered later that she was pregnant). Both incidents have made me very aware of possible accidents and of what cats can do when they are in heat.

In fear of being rude to Jessy, can I ask a similar question? Will cats also jump down a 2 story foyer? My kitten went dangerously close to the edge by the spindles, looking like she was debating to jump... Will she know better when she's older, not having birds to entice her since it's inside?

They will jump if they want- no matter what.

I have just recently made a cover for my landing window! I made a frame and covered it with chicken wire! It is working brilliantly - I will be making more for around the house!

Hi everyone, thank you for your advice, I think for now I will put notes on the windows and warn everyone that she will jump out.

Wow Hissy that's a great idea, I love having the windows open but I have alway's been afraid of them pushing the screen out and taking off, I have window seats in my bedroom and they Love to lay there and in the one in the bonus room, and that can't cost that much, there's another project for hubby,

I have another question. Is that related to their marriage season? I mean if I got her spayed she would stop trying to jump out of the window?

She will stop the "naughty stuff" when she gets spayed.  Otherwise it will continue, again and again, louder and louder.  She might still jump out an unscreened window, but you would be less likely to have four-legged Romeo cats climbing the side of the house to visit her.

@SMakki  It depends how old she is when you get her spayed if she will stop or not. I know my girl was 10 months and she is a little more cuddly but other than that she hasnt changed a bit. She still is the princess and lets the boys know it.  She climbs up on the windows and if I had them open I am 100% sure she would jump out as soon as she saw a bird. I would either leave the window closed or put a screen on the window so she cant jump out.

I am not sure when your cat will get "old and nature."  I have 3-year-olds here who are still very playful and talkative, and a two year old who is sweet, cuddly, and acts "mature."  And I have a 14 year old who still has attitude.  The 17-year-old is now pretty old and mature.
