I have a two year old neutered male cat, Sinatra. He is a bit crazy and does odd things all of the time, but today he did something that was very odd. He was dragging his bum on the carpet and pulling himself forward with this front legs. I checked his bum and there doesn't appear to be anything wrong from what I can tell. Is this normal (or at least semi normal) behavior or should I take him to the vet to have him checked out?

Hi Thisbecat, If there is no diarrhea or leaky stools or "nuggets" hanging off his "bum," I would say just keep on eye on him for now, but I don't think there is a need to bring him to the vet if you don't see any other outward symptoms. My cat Napoleon does that too for absolutely no reason...his butt is always clean yet he feels the need to do it. Cassie (my girl) did it after her spaying because she couldn't lean over to clean her butt after she was done doing her business!

He hasn't been wormed, but the last time I took him to the vet he said he was healthy and there was nothing wrong. He's a long hair cat, indoor only and doesn't have fleas.

If he's a long hair, he could have just had a little "dingleberry" hanging off his little bum. Gross, but there you have it.
If the behavior persists, please take him to the vet to have him tested for worms. If it doesn't, you might want to take him to a groomer and have them shave a little "safety zone" around his bum to prevent, uh, clumpage.

From what I understand this can also be a symptom of impacted anal glands. You might want to call your vet and describe the behavior in any case and see if they think you need to bring him in.

Thank you all so much for your help. I'm going to be watching Sinatra to see if the odd behavior persists and if so I'll take him in for a check up.

My Sheba did this several times, so I took her to the vet to have her checked for possible anal gland problems. There wasn't any, but the vet found a small growth on the rectum just inside the anus.

I would disagree, dragging the bum can be a case of parasites, impacted anal glands. It can also be if the cat is long-haired that the hair gets caught and causes irritation. But if the cat is scooting a lot, a vet visit is indeed in order.

I would definatly call my vet & ask about it. Like people have said could be anal gland problems, or parasites. Impacted anal glands can be serious. They can get infected & I've even heard that if left untreated they can actually create an open sore on the cat. Parasites are obviously bad because they take nutrition away from the cat. I would at the very least take a stool sample in to chek for parasites.

This is definitely an anal gland problem. One of my cats has the same issue. I take him every so often to have his drained...highly recommend it for the poor little guy.
