What questions should we ask the vet?

Background...
Tuesday we adopted a 12 wk. old kitten from the Veterinarian's. From what we know of her history, she had been rescued 2 weeks earlier from a "difficult" life (how difficult, they won't tell us or might not even know). They had already removed a maggot from her neck, and treated her for worms. They kept her on antibiotics for about a week, and when she looked better some days later, released her for adoption to us.

Things were going well at home for a couple days. She ate her kitten food (Happy Tails Kitten dry food) like she had been starving. Drank plenty of water, and seemed chipper, playful and sociable, and took to her new litter box like a pro.

Our other 14 yr. old cat was kept completely separate from the kitten. Different litter boxes, food, water, etc. Kitten was isolated in a bedroom (no trauma, no contact w/ other cat).

Then, Thursday afternoon, she developed diarrhea which never stopped. She also stopped eating. We tried every type of food, but her intake for the last three days hadn't amounted to a teaspoon.

She is now (as of Sunday) at the vet's to try to figure this out. They say they'll try subcutaneous hydration plus some diarrhea medicine in a liquid form(?).

So... if she makes it through the night (praying), what questions should we be asking the vet when they call us tomorrow?

Thanks!

Hi there:
Here are my things I would be thinking about in this situation:
Has kitty been vaccinated and tested for all the appropriate kitty diseases?
Has the vet tested for coccidia?
Diarrhea is one of the main symptoms of this illness, and it can be very difficult for little ones to shake...

Other than that, I'll keep you and the little one in my thoughts. It can be hard when the tiny ones get behind the 8 Ball, but their ability to bounce back never amazes me.

I would say run the fecal to the lab to test for giardia, coccidia and other bacterial infections.

Feed the kitty a mixture of cooked hamburger and rice, to try and bind her up a bit, but don't overfeed her.

Consider not feeding Happy Tails and go to Royal Canin, or IAMS or another quality dry food. Switch the food gradually so she doesn't encounter problems.

Make sure you keep the litterpans scrubbed and scooped. Scoop several times daily, and scrub them with hot vinegar and hot hot water once a day. (Tip, I scrub my litterpans with a toilet brush) and wear rubber gloves when handling them.

Does she have fleas?

Ask your vet if he will prescribe Cyproheptadine- a safe and very effective appetite stimulant.

What a pleasure to get responses this fast! I'm a moderator at another forum (something not having anything to do with cats, other than members occasionally posting their pet's pictures).

This diarrhea thing is really troubling us. It can be a real killer os small cats, from what I've read here.

I don't know all the details of her deworming. Vaccinations thus far were for Rhinotracheitis, Calicvirus & Panleukopenia (parts 1 of 3 completed).

Coccidia and Giardia were two problems I was going to ask about tomorrow, but didn't know about until I searched around here this afternoon - so... I don't know if she was or will be tested.

They already did a quick visual fecal inspection a few days ago, but that was just for wormy infestation stuff.

Thanks Olly!

Thanks, hissy. I only hope we get her back alive enough to try cooking her up some special dinners sometime soon.

The Happy Trails food was only supposed to be a quick something before we found better food. The vet was feeding her this stuff (actually Science Diet Kitten Original), but the ingredients are about the same. I know (now) that its bad bad stuff, and have been reading the other threads about the better foods.

Fleas? No. I wouldn't think so, but that would have been way down our list of possible issues right now.

Our little baby made it through this one.

She was at the vet from Sunday morning until Tuesday evening and was sooo very happy to see us tonight, and was even purring while on the stainless steel examining table. I think we were purring too.

She's home, and eating, and full of playful energy

Thanks everyone for your concern and suggestions.

She is an absolutely beautiful kitten and I am so glad she is home safe. Did thevet say what was actually wrong?
