How can you tell how old a kitten is?

The kitten I adopted is probably around 8 weeks or so now, but nobody really knows for sure. The lady at the shelter was guessing around 8 or 9 weeks at the time of adoption, which is 1 1/2 weeks ago. I was thinking she was around 8. The same day I took her to the vet, and he seemed quite certain that she was 6 weeks. Then a few days later I took her in again and then he seemed unsure. One week after we got her she reached 2 Lbs. She was underweight when we got her, and I've been given her NutriCal which is a nutritional supplement. She's doing real well but still quite thin. Size wise she really did seem about 8 weeks to me, just sluggish from malnutrition and bugs of all kinds. And you'd think that a thin kitten that's 2 Lbs would be at least 8 weeks????

How do vet's determine a kittens age; simply just by looking at the size, or behaviour, weight, other?
It did bother me when he said 6 weeks; she had been at the shelter for 1 week already, so that means she would have been away from the mother since 5 weeks old or even before...

I think it's a combination of size, weight, level of developement (IE: Motor skills) and teeth.
