Should I go male/female, or just pick the kitty I like the best?

I just got a female kitten, about 8 weeks old or so, 1 1/2 weeks ago. I am going to add one more kitten, and a neighbour down the street has 2 that will be ready to go in another week or two. They have both been raised inside and are healthy/well taken care of. One is male and the other is female. I'll be able to take only one of them.
I have read that it usually is better to go male/female than two of the same gender. Do you agree, or should I pick the one I like the best? They both seem to have a good personality, but I kind of liked that female.... The male seemed very chubby, I don't know if that matters? I am guessing they must have been about 5 weeks old when I saw them. Both beautiful and well socialized.
Any thoughts on the matter?

Let the kitten pick you.
The one that comes to you and is social...

Definitly wait until you see what kittens are there, since your baby is so young it wont make any difference whether you get a male or a female.

I don't really think male or female matters, they're both just babies so they'll be more apt to get along anyways. I'd say just pick the kitty who you seem to "click" with!

I have two unrelated females and they get along very well. I don't think sex/gender is much of a getting along factor when both cats have been spayed or neutered. I could be wrong. As for weight... Izzie was a well-filled out kitten while she was nursing, but now she's a lean little girl at almost 1 year.

I think personality is more important than gender - I have had many of both sexes over the years. Do try and leave your new kitten with its mama until it is 11/12 weeks old if you can - you will have a much better balanced cat as a result.

I went to the shelter looking for a little boy. I was so scared of getting a little girl spayed. I still am (just ask Amy {ugaimes}). When I went to get a boy kitty, guess who jumped out and said "Be my meowmy!!!". You guessed it -- My little April Joy! YES! Let the kitty pick you! I was adopted by April Joy and I couldn't be happier!!
