This afternoon as Mike and I were pulling out of our driveway to go to the vets, we noticed a black stationwagon creeping slowly alongside our road. The car stopped in front of a house several doors down and sat there while two men stared intently at the home. Then it went to the next house and the next. We were idling far enough in our driveway that I don't think they saw us at first and they stopped in front of our house, and both of us just got a creepy feeling. They were so intent on looking at the house they didn't see us at first, but when they did, they drove away quickly and sat two houses down on the side of the road.

We pulled out to the end of our driveway and we both were staring at them, when they suddenly swung out into traffic whipped a huge illegal u-turn on the highway and took off speeding away from us.

We started after them, our intent was to get their license number. There were two scruffy looking men in the car, but they were going at least 75 mph (the speed limit is 55) and it took some doing and a lot of praying to get close enough to really see the car.

In the back seat were all these black duffle bags full of who knows what, and two kids were sandwiched between about 8-10 bags. I was writing down their license number when they noticed we were next to them, and they turned quickly on a side street and sped away.

We stopped at the sherriff's and told them what happened and gave them the make of the car and the license number. We were told that if we see the car again, or the two men to call 911 immediately.

I wonder though, if it was just an odd coincidence and they were lost or something but it sure was creepy strange. We also have told our neighbors on the road, the ones we saw them stopping in front of. I don't know what they were up to if anything- maybe we just watch too much CSI and Criminal Intent-

I would have reported it too! That's not right. Sounds to me like they were casing houses, or thinking of robbing one right then. If you're not doing anything wrong, you don't have to run away...

I would have reported it too Mary Anne. The behaviour of the people in the car seems very suspicious to me. The black duffle bags really creep me out.

I would have reported it, too. It seems like these people were up to no good, by the way they were acting. It seems to me like they may have been casing out the neighborhood.

I also believe you should always trust your "gut" feeling. It's usually right.

That's really creepy, MA. You did the right thing not only to report them due to the appearance of their behavior, but due to the uneasy feeling you got from them.
It was also really good of you to warn your neighbors.

Thanks for the assurances. It has been chewing on my head all day just because of the young kids in the back- I mean what thief takes their toddlers on a day heist?

True. I guess I would have worried that the kids weren't theres, that they had kidnapped them or something, but then I have a flair for the dramatic!!

You can never be too careful. I would have reported it too. Their behavior was definitely suspicious. And as for the kids in the car, I wouldn't be surprised that someone would take their kids along to case a neighborhood or commit robbery. People will do anything. Just when you think there can never be someone who would do such a thing, there they are on the evening news or right there in your neighborhood.

You did the right thing MA - it sounds like they were looking at likely targets. If they were lost then surely they would have approached you to ask you where to find the place they were looking for. We did exactly the same thing as you when we noticed a car acting suspiciously outside a local school.

You did the right thing MA. Better that it turns out to be nothing, than to have let it go and then someone on your street gets robbed. Besides, it would have creeped me out too.

That's not unheard of unfortunately I've heard stories like that on the news a few times.

I think you did the right thing MA. If they weren't up to something they wouldn't have fled!
