I was really bored at work earlier so I did a search on google for "phobia"

I found a list of phobias. Pretty interesting. So many things I never thought anyone could ever be afraid of.

There is one that just made me laugh out loud. Not because of the fear itself but the phobia seems to have a very unfortunate name:

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia- Fear of long words

That's gotta be a joke, right?

Here's where I found it: http://www.phobialist.com/

Being a psych major I've actually seen that one before. The whole class was laughing as the professor told us what fear he was going to tell us about, then proceeded to attempt to pronounce that word. It was great. There are a TON of really out there fears though, that's for sure!

Its called a Psychology Overture.. Being in Psych too long, I can tell you there are many

Its actually constructed as an ironicism for no real purpose at all but to relay the oddity of it. The real term used by professionals is sesquipedalian.
As you could probably infer, its not that 'common' a phobia....

Under the cats, mostly.
Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

Chaetophobia- Fear of hair.

Chromophobia or Chromatophobia- Fear of colors.

Dipsophobia- Fear of drinking.

Dutchphobia- Fear of the Dutch

Epistemophobia- Fear of knowledge

Genuphobia- Fear of knees

Kathisophobia- Fear of sitting down.

I have to say, some of these really open your eyes to the irrationalitied of the mind!

I wonder if there is a word for the fear of making spelling mistakes.
