My niece, who's 10, is coming to spend the night tomorrow and we're planning to stay up late watching movies, make popcorn, etc.. I'm looking for ideas for movies to rent that both us will like. She has pretty much outgrown (or likes to think she has) any animated stuff. Also, all the Harry Potter movies are out because she's already seen them so many times. Her parents are pretty strict about what she watches, so I want to respect this. Any ideas? Thanks!

I know you said she's outgrown animation, but have you tried any Miyazaki stuff? My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away are _fantastic_, I would stay away from Princess Mononoke though.

It's hard to remember being 10 and 10 years olds like...

Normally, I don't like animation, but I highly recommend. "Spirit,Stallion of the Cimmeron". It is a wonderful story, beautiful animation, and thank goodness, the animals are animals, and not singing and dancing horses.

How about "Big" with Tom Hanks? That was one of my faves growing up. "The Never Ending Story" is also an oldie but a goodie

I'm sure your niece is going to have a great time with her Aunt Eileen!

Edited to add: Two Brothers! It is such a sweet and touching movie and the tiger cubs are PRECIOUS!!!

Another thought, thinking of childhood movies, I used to ADORE "The Labyrinth". What beats David Bowie as a goblin king?

Amy, you beat me to it. Two Brothers is one of the best movies ever made and it is suitable for adults and children. I've seen it 8 times and I might watch it again tonight. Not only do you get to see adorable tiger cubs, the story is excellent too. It's a definite must see for all cat lovers! To see previews click here.

My 11 year old niece, who also likes to think she is older, just watched the original Willy Wonka w/ Gene Wilder and loved it. Ella Enchanted or Princess Diaries? Maybe something Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan might be good - Freaky Friday or A Cinderella Story. Kid oriented without being too childish. Oh and I have seen all of those and they are actually pretty cute.

Excuse me! You don't ever outgrow GOOD animation
!

The Road to El Dorado, my favorite traditional animation sadly under-marketed
Spirited Away is very good anime' style that appeals to people not used to anime'
Wallace and Gromit shorts for classic "Claymation" animation
The Incredibles for modern CGI animation

For Live action:
The Princess Bride which has IMHO the all-time best sword fight scene
Pirates of the Caribbean which is although hyped to death actually a good "capture" of the spirit of the old Pirate movies. I believe it's rated PG however.

Hmmm, checking the movies I watch and re-watch, I see that most of mine are animation!

Labyrinth definitely (and for adult fun, you can document the subtle growth of David Bowie's "package" as the movie progresses!
Seriously, there was some major sock-stuffage going on there! LOL!)
Aladdin, Emperor's New Groove, Chicken Run
Any Muppet Movie would be great
Maybe old musicals? Westside Story, Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Music Man, Wizard of Oz?
