My precious baby Stormy is an outdoor cat! I went out this afternoon and his left cheek is horribly swollen! You can see it twenty feet away! I tried to touch it to make sure he just didnt have something in his mouth and it is hard! Its definately swollen! I dont know why but it wasnt like that yesterday! Any one have any idea what it might be or what I can do to help him? I really cant afford a vet right now.......

Give him a half of a 25mg benadryl! He probably is having an allergic reaction to a sting of some sort =( Let us know how he turns out!!

My guess would be some kind of insect sting or bite as well, but I would definitely take him to the vet to find out for sure and so that they can treat him! I hope he's okay!

It could also be an abscess on a tooth, but whatever it is it is probably painful. I would opt for a vet.

Jrotcchic- take a look at the "sticky" thread near the top of this forum which is titled "Health and Nutrition Articles". When you scroll down a bit, you'll see information on what to do if you can't afford a vet.

I agree that Stormy might have an abscess, as was mentioned by another member. If that's the case, it may need to be drained, and specific antibiotics should be given. It's also possible it could be a sting, or another type of injury. Since we can only guess, the best advice anyone can give you is to get Stormy to the vet.

It's always a good idea to put some money away each week or month for just such emergencies as this. Even a couple of dollars put away each day adds up. There are vets who will work with you if you have financial difficulties - some will offer payment plans. Please start to call vets in your area, or get a recommendation from friends or family who have animals, and get Stormy in so he can be diagnosed and treated.

Good luck - please let us know how Stormy's doing.

Hi 4 43kellim this thread is ten years old and the original poster hasn't been back, so finding out what happened to their cat is unlikely.

How swollen is your cat's cheek? How are they acting otherwise? I would be concerned about the poisonous critters in your area.

A tooth problem is another possibility: I once had a cat who suddenly got a swollen cheek and it turned out she had an abscess and a broken tooth. She didn't seem at all in pain, either, and the swelling came on fairly quickly. She was fine after the vet pulled what remained of the tooth.

Good luck!
