Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me. My 17 week Persian kitten, Olga, has very dry skin on one ear and a patch on one paw. I took her to the vet last week who said she had mange and that she was too small to treat but it should clear up by itself. I asked her about ear mites as she has dark wax in one ear but the vet said there would be scratch marks if she had mites. Does this sound right? I'm worried as I can feel a few more dry spots on her head. She isn't scratching and it doesn't seem to be sore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Have you tried another vet. I am no expert but I would be concerned with the ear mite issue. If untreated it could lead to infection. I have treated Persians with mites, I have never had to deal with mange and I don't know much about it. Do you notice Olga rubbing her ears, shaking her head? If so I would try another vet. Hope this helps.

I see no mention of a culture being done to help determine the skin condition in question.
Since there are a couple types of mange, if this is indeed mange, you'll want to know what type, because not all mange just 'goes away by itself'.
There is also the fact that there are so many skin conditions, quite a few can mimic each other in appearance.

As for the mites, again, if you are concerned, a culture should be done and at the very least, a vet should clean those ears.
Even without mites, dirty ears can cause some serious problems in their own right.

Thanks for your replies. Olga isn't scratching or shaking her head. The vet didn't do a culture, she just said come back in a month if it hasn't cleared up. Her ears aren't really dirty, just a little and she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort so i think I will give it another week and take her to a new vet.

I don't have a back yard, she is an indoor cat. She eats Science Plan, Nature's Best.
