After hearing all the praise of the wet diets, I am thinking of changing my kitties to primarily wet food. I have heard all the discussions on the best dry food. What are the best wet foods out there?

Look for things with no by-products, that use human grade ingredients, that don't have artificial colourings or preservatives, things like that.

If you want specific brand reccomendations, Wellness is my personal choice, there's also Innova, California Natural, Natural Balance, Merrick and Felidae. There are others as well, but I can't think of them off the top of my head

I have heard good things about Merrick, Wellness, Innova and CA Natural wet food.

Good luck getting your kits on a wet diet! Maybe someday my babies will also come around...

The only thing I can get all 4 to agree on is Purina Indoor Formula. Can you get any of those foods at Petsmart?

The wet food / dry food debate has me baffled and I need help. Some people have told me to feed ONLY dry food to my cats (I was told wet food causes crystals?), while others swear that I should change to ONLY wet food. Others say a mix is best. I'm really not sure how to find out the best thing to do. My Callie (4 months) is on wet in the morning and dry in the afternoon, and my Tigger (3 years) is on only dry... she won't go near any brand of wet food (we've tried them all!)

So how do I know which is best when I keep hearing different things? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Kathy

Kathy, you might be intersted in an article that julebean has posted here:

It's a great article about wet and dry food.

I've never heard of wet food causing crystals however... usually it's the opposite (that dry is what can cause them!)

EDIT: Oops! Sharky you beat me to it!

Wet food doesn't cause crystals, the prescription diet for crystals IS a wet food. Dehydration causes crystals, and some cats don't drink enough water, which causes the dehydration.

Nutro doesn't use artificial colors or chemical preservatives in their food. I know a lot of people who feed the cans and pouches, I'm going to talk to my vet today about diet and see if I should get them off the mostly dry diet on to canned, provided they will eat it. They won't even eat people-food chicken!

meow mix and authority are available at petsmart. authority is petsmart's brand with no by-products. sadly my cats only seem to like 1 flavor.
if you watch the ingredients, some flavors of fancy feast are pretty good. i tend to buy the pro plan, fancy feast, meow mix pouches and one flavor of: iams, authority & nutro natural. my guys are pretty darn fussy about what they will eat, and we've run the gambit of the spendy high-end foods (snubbing 99% of them, thus homeless kitties were given some REALLY good food). they eat high quality kibble, though.

My cats don't like wet food for whatever reason. The two of them can not finish one pouch of Nutro together. I still give it to them though, but most of it goes to waste.

I would love to switch my 6 cats to a very good brand of canned such as Felidae, Wellness, Innova etc but jeepers....It's 79 cents or more for a 5 to 6 ounce can. If one cats eat a can or two every day that is very expensive. Can anyone recommend good decent priced foods and/or where to buy them?

Authority and Nutro are both good no by products grd corn or chemicals and the cats eat them...

Authrity is about 55 cent s for the 5-6 oz can ... Nutro runs 50-1.00 a can depending where you by it...

amazingly Innova , Wellness and Solid Gold were not eaten at my house
....

MIne love the beef and catifish authority, Nutros salmon and shrimp chowder

I know for sure that you can not buy Merrick at Petsmart. It sure would be nice if you could though.

Petsmart doesn't carry any of those. I know Petco carries Eagle Pack, and I think Felidae. If you have a Pet Supplies "Plus" near you, you might be able to find Merrick. I know PSP carries Merrick dog bones, so I'd guess they carry the dog and cat food.
I'm happy with just Nutro, though.
