I'm a little upset over a rumor I heard today about Amish running puppy and kitty mills. I heard the mills are dirty and poorly ran, and they are sending these animals all over the country in horrible conditions to pet stores, ect, and alot of them die while traveling. The rumor also states that there has been articles in Cat Fancy and Dog Fancy. I've been taking Cat Fancy for longer than 10 years and I've never read anything like that before. I live 5 miles for an Amish community and know some of them very well. They are very hard workers, respectable, and are very nice people. The families I know take very good care of all their animals, and would never do such a thing. I just feel sorry for the bad rap these people are getting! The rumor also states the the Amish in the mid-west are Known for doing this....This is the first I've ever heard of this, and I've lived 5 miles from them ,here in NE Iowa all my life!

It isn't a rumor..there are puppy and kitten mills that are run by Amish individuals...just look at what came up on google:

In fact, this is what came up when I put in "amish" "puppy mill"

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
I remember Susie(kittylover4ever) told me a while back that she had been to some fayre the Amish people had, and said they were selling kittens

Susie told the person in question that the kittens were too young and should still be with their mum.

I think we are just talking about a few bad apples in the amish community, not all. i lived next door to the amish for years, and these ppl were hard working, and defiantly did not run puppy mills. look at how many people run puppy mill compared to the amish. there are bad apples in every community, and to say that the amish run puppy mills is like saying mexicans run puppy mills, or germans run puppy mills and so on. it is unfair to say all do.

Your right enigma! I live 5 miles away from some wonderful Amish families who are very hard working ,respectable, kind people. And they would be so ashamed to know about the Amish that are doing this! I plan on asking them what they know and think about it. Maybe if enough "good" Amish people know what's going on, they can come together as a team and put an end to this!

it is sad though that these things happen. when i go to the popular flea market around here, they sell kittens and puppies and some of them are in terrible shape!! one puppy was losing fur on his tail, and i have seen kittens skinny and way to young to be seperated. sad thing is, state cops walk by without saying anything!! they also sell illigal dvds made by cameras in movie theaters, they have been selling the star wars movie already and some others, and sell homemade copied music cd's. and cops buy there also. it makes me sick sometimes to see ppl make money of off someone elses work, but the condition of the animals really make me sick. i get soooo mad that my husband is always afriad i will over react.

My husband too! If were somewhere and we come across something like that, he'll always say to me, "just walk on by and dont even look and please dont say anything!" He says this because of past reactions I've had with people in public places. I cant help myself! I have to speak my mind to them, or I'll be insane by the end of the day if I dont! So, I always say to him, "Ok honey, I'll be good" until were upon them, and then I turn and give them hell! He always looks shocked, but by this time he should know me

We have a huge auction barn in a nearby Amish area that sells everything imaginable every Friday night. They used to just throw the puppies/kittens up on the auction block but I THINK they started just selling them flea market style...which I guess may cut down on the trauma but is no better. Very sad indeed.

I once had the sad experience of treating a puppy adopted from Amish 'breeders' ; she had Parvo, and she died despite the clinics' best efforts. The Amish apparently didn't believe in vaccines, and the entire litter died an entirely preventable death!!
